A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Haitian coast on 12 January, rocking the capital, with hundreds of thousands dead. It is the biggest earthquake to hit the region for 200 years. 3 Million people have been affected.
Our partnered charity Plan UK has worked in the country since 1973, and is working closely with government, emergency services and other organisations to respond to the needs of children and assess the situation.
Although provision of emergency healthcare and distribution of food and water remains a problem, with fuel shortages causing significant difficulties, aid is beginning to trickle through. Plan is currently prioritising child protection, water and sanitation, and health, as well as basic psycho-social support for children.
Marie Staunton, Chief Executive of Plan UK, put together this video for Travel Counsellors about the current efforts and progress of Plan in Haiti
