Tanzania offers everything we want from an African holiday. It’s home to the continent’s highest peak, Mt Kilimanjaro, and borders the immense Lake Victoria. It encompasses the vast, game-filled plains of the Serengeti and has a stunning Indian Ocean coastline lined with beaches. The exotic spice island of Zanzibar is Tanzanian. The Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic bowl 10 miles wide where some 30,000 animals live, offers some of the greatest wildlife viewing in the world. For something more off the beaten track on your holiday to Tanzania, head south to the remote camps and lodges of the Selous, or visit the primeval forests bordering Lake Tanganyika, where you can track down hilarious colonies of chimpanzees. Tanzania is an excellent choice if you like snorkelling or diving. Head for islands such as Pemba and Mafia, which are just a short flight from Dar-es-Salaam.
