As a Physical Geography graduate with a real passion for nature and wildlife, Canada has long been at the top of my travel bucket list. Finally, in April 2023, my best mate and I arrived into Vancouver, 3 years after we had originally booked this adventure. Our journey promised an action-packed 2 weeks of adventure, landscapes, snow, (hopefully) wildlife between over 2000km worth of open road! After waiting so long to finally reach its shores, I feared the hype may have been too great and the reality would not live up to expectations but this could not have been further from the truth, Canada. Blew. Me. Away. I love a road trip and I’m pretty sure Canada is THE ultimate destination for a journey of this kind. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should consider a road trip across Canada: Incredible Scenery: Canada has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the world. From the rugged mountains of the Rockies to the stunning coastline of British Columbia and the beautiful lakes and forests of Ontario and Quebec, Canada has it all. Driving through these beautiful landscapes is an experience unlike any other. The drive between Jasper and Banff National Parks takes you down the Icefields Parkway, one of the finest drives anywhere on the planet! Vastness and Diversity: Canada is the second largest country in the world and has a diverse landscape, climate, and culture. Whilst you can drive for hours without seeing another car or person, the journey between Vancouver and Calgary passes through a number of towns and National Parks providing plenty of amazing places to visit along the way. This diversity makes for a unique and memorable road trip experience. Great Roads: Canada is known for having some of the best roads in the world. With wide open roads, not a pot hole in sight and alternating overtaking lanes, driving in Canada is a breeze. The highways are well-maintained with plenty of rest stops, “gas stations”, and attractions along the way. All of this combined with the amazing landscapes as a backdrop makes driving in Canada a genuine pleasure! (driving back in England is chaos by comparison). Wildlife: Canada is home to some of the world’s most iconic wildlife. On our journey alone we saw Elk, Deer, Mountain Goats, the Canadian Black Fox and on our boat trip we saw pods of Orca and even a Grey Whale! If you were to visit during the summer months (essentially any time not in the winter), you could add Humpback Whales, Grizzly Bears, Moose and Timber Wolves to this list. It goes without saying you need to keep a safe distance from ALL of these animals, however, seeing them in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Friendly People: It is almost a worldwide stereotype that Canadians are the nicest people on the planet. Always quick to help, offer advice and very welcoming at all times, you never feel alone when you’re out there and know you can turn to locals to ask for directions or for any local recommendations. Outdoor Adventures: Canada is a great place to get outdoors and explore. Whether you're hiking in the mountains, kayaking on a lake, or skiing in the winter, there are plenty of outdoor activities to you to enjoy so all you need to do is lace up your hiking boots and begin exploring the great outdoors (though don’t forget your bear spray if you’re off the grid). Overall, Canada is the ultimate road trip destination because it offers so much for absolutely anyone and everyone. From breath-taking scenery and unique wildlife through to world-beating hiking trails, skiing and canoeing, what more could you need? The growth of microbreweries and gin distilleries across Canada means no matter where you stop, you can enjoy a local brew or two after a day on the road.
