Alicante is the second biggest city in Valencia and one of the fastest growing in Spain. Alicante airport is, of course, the air gateway to the Costa Blanca with its popular holiday resorts and great beaches. But Alicante is worth a visit. The ancient Castillo de Santa Barbara with its drawbridges and dungeons overlooks Alicante from atop Monte Benacantil. Yes you can drive up to it but you can also get there by passenger lift from the beach. Down below, linger among the outdoor cafes and the palm trees of the Rambla, Alicante’s main drag. There’s also the handsome Explanada d’Espanya by the yacht harbour and no shortage of shops, parks and marble plazas in the city. Alicante is always busy and especially during its fabulous fiesta which, every year during the last week of June, celebrates with gusto the feast of Saint Joan.
