Anguilla’s interior has little to offer holidaymakers but the island’s beaches unquestionably rank as some of the best confections of turquoise sea and sugar sand in the world. Often ignored by tourists, Anguilla has been able to resist large-scale holiday complexes and gone for small but expensively formed hotels and villas. Holidays in Anguilla suit travellers who like nothing better than beach life and water sports. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and the island has one of the best records for safety in the Caribbean. Barely thirty-five square miles in size, Anguilla is the northernmost island in the Leeward group. The uninhabited cays – small, low islands – are easy to visit on a holiday to Anguilla but agree the price in advance with the local fishermen. Pack a picnic and a parasol, and you can have your own private island for the day.
