The British Virgin Islands, known as the BVIs, are an archipelago of around sixty islands and small low cays. Sixteen islands are inhabited. The islands are in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Holidays in the British Virgin Islands tend to involve visiting around four of the islands. Tortola Island is the commercial and cosmopolitan centre. Virgin Gorda, twelve miles east of Tortola, has a more hide-away style. Jost Van Dyke, three miles off the northwest coast of Tortola, is a tiny ‘no shoes no news’ island. Electricity only arrived here about fifteen years ago. Anegada, fourteen miles north of Virgin Gorda, is a sleepy island known for its beaches and picnic spots. Of the outlying islands, Necker Island is probably the most well known. Like many of its neighbours, it is privately owned. Islands tend to be occupied by a single resort hotel or one villa. What you won’t find during your holiday to the British Virgin Islands are brash high-rise hotels or casinos. There aren’t many nightclubs but plenty of bars. What you will find is that all the action takes place on the BVI’s fabulous turquoise tepid waters. Island life revolves around harbours, marinas, jetties and more or less anywhere there’s a mooring.
