The Channel Islands are closer to the north French coast than to the south coast of England. Yet these holiday islands are distinctively British but in a quirky way. The five main inhabited islands are Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm. Jersey is the largest island. It has beautiful sweeping sandy bays, a fertile hilly interior and a reasonably lively capital. Guernsey has a rockier coastline with an attractive harbour town. Some of the Nazi fortifications from the island’s occupation during World War II have been converted into museums. Alderney is the most northerly island and has quiet small quiet beaches.Sark and Herm are tiny walkable islands, each with a smattering of shops, holiday accommodation and pubs.
