Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, covering 110,860 sq km. It lies at the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico and is bound on the south by the Caribbean Sea and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the tourist attractions on holidays in Cuba are to be found in the provinces to the immediate east and west of the capital of Havana. Pinar del Río is the centre of nature tourism, while hikers head for Las Terrazas and Soroa or the prehistoric valley of Viñales. Varadero, a two-hour drive from Havana, is the country’s top tourist destination, with almost 25 kms of sandy beaches and all-inclusive hotels offering a wide range of water sports and nightlife.
