Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and one of Britain’s most beautiful cities. At its heart is an impressive castle perched up on high for all to see. The largely medieval Royal Mile runs through the centre of Edinburgh from the Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House: on one side the Old Town, the other the handsome Georgian New Town. Both Towns are now UNESCO world heritage sites. Many holidays in Edinburgh centre round the Arts festivals in August. For three weeks every year the arts world moves to the city for its Edinburgh International Festival with its rich programme of classical music, theatre and dance. It runs alongside the Edinburgh Festival fringe – the largest arts festival in the world.Hogmanay (the Scottish New Year) is also a hugely popular festival. Celebrations and special events take place over four days from 29 December to 1 January.
