Though Britain is right next door, it’s surprising how little of France we’ve actually seen. Of course, Paris is where most of us have ended at one point or another, but there is a world of sights and beautiful scenery to be seen outside of the City of Lights. France is the world’s most popular holiday destination, thanks to its culture, history, gastronomy, fashion and design – not to mention the diversity of its geography. It’s amazing how you can go from snow-capped mountains to Mediterranean coast and rolling hills dotted with castles in a single country.

This is not to say that you should skip Paris. Au contraire. Paris, even if you’ve visited many times before, always has some surprises in store. How many travellers have explored its Roman past, or visited its renowned flea markets, or taken a Turkish bath at an authentic hamam in the city? In regard to its museums, it’s nearly impossible to see every piece in the Louvre, even with repeat visits. Small museums too have ever-changing exhibitions so there is always something fresh for the eyes. The next time you sit at a café, nibbling on fresh crepes coated in button and sugar, think about all the things you haven’t seen in Paris, and make plans to see them.

Elsewhere in France, there are plenty of opportunities to indulge your love of culture and style. The Loire Valley is famous for its wines, best enjoyed at a lovely country chateau. Do travel south to Provence, one of the most popular tourist regions in France. Travel through the same quaint villages that inspired Impressionist painters like Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh. Venture farther south still to reach the Mediterranean coast. Marseille, the second largest city in the country, has now become a centre of sophistication, leaving its reputation as a rough, unpolished port behind. Then there’s the glamour of Monaco and the posh French Riviera. You don’t have to be rich to visit there. France’s joie de vivre is something everyone can enjoy.

Paris is the city of culture and all roads seem to lead here.

The bevy of wine choices is a bit mind-boggling, but what a wonderful problem to have.

Travelling through Provence, the sweet smell of lavender hangs in the air.
