The islands of the Grenadines are referred to as “the jewels of the Caribbean.” With a single visit, you’ll be captivating by their glittering splendours. Saint Vincent is the largest of the islands. Here, you’ll find Georgian architecture, stunning botanical gardens, historical sights like Fort Charlotte, and beaches that are picture perfect. It’s no wonder that so many visitors are content to while away the days just lounging, swimming, and snorkelling. But as tempting as that is, do go and explore the island. Listen to steel pan bands, pick up colourful batik cloth in the markets, and sip rum punch.
The lush mountains of Saint Vincent make it a natural place for hikes and eco-adventures on a Grenadines holiday. Six varieties of dolphins plus orca and pilot whales can be spotted in its warm, clear waters. You’ll want to get a closer look by taking a boat cruise or catamaran trip. Venture farther to visit the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary where efforts are underway to save the Hawksbill turtle from extinction. Take a Jeep tour for a glimpse at authentic island life. You’ll wind along mountain roads, next to rain forests, remote villages and gorges with fresh-water streams.
If you want to get away from the rest of the crowd, take a ferry to a neighbouring island. Mustique has pristine spots, perfect for secluded picnics and afternoon naps with just the sound of the waves for noise. Or island hop to tiny Bequia where the locals gather for barbecues at the Frangipani Hotel and divers don their gear to explore undersea life.
Johnny Depp was here. He filmed part of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl on Tobago Cays, five deserted islets that are simply gorgeous.
The markets bustle with life. From fruit vendors to Rastafarians selling souvenirs, it’s where tourists can really see the Caribbean spirit in action.
Music is an important part of the islands. You can see that first hand by seeing live bands and going to a “jump up”, where having a good time is the only thing on your to-do list.
