The Hawaiian island of Oahu is home to Honolulu, the largest city in the state, and perhaps the most fun. It is like many cities rolled into one with fascinating neighbourhoods and a bustling beach scene.

There’s no time to be bored here. There’s always something to do and to see, making a Honolulu holiday the perfect choice.

As the state capital, Honolulu is also a cultural centre with plenty of museums and historical sights to explore. The Bishop Museum has an excellent collection of Hawaiian artifacts and its science centre takes vulcanology (the study of volcanoes) seriously. There is even a simulated volcano that erupts regularly. Bring the children here and they’ll love it and so will you. For art fans, the Contemporary Museum takes a modern approach to art with featured artists like David Hockney on display in an old estate house that overlooks the city.

Close by, it is the internationally famous Waikiki Beach. It has been a favourite playground among Hawaiian royalty since the 19th century and continues to be popular among locals and tourists alike. At some point, you may have seen the iconic images of the crescent shaped beach with Diamond Head looming large in the background. It represents Hawaii to the world and is not to be missed. Add some Hawaiian culture to your holiday by attending a traditional laua or hula show. You’ll have an opportunity to sample Hawaiian dishes and do a bit of dancing too. It’s great fun.

Chinatown is a historic area that is a wonderful mix of shops, lei makers, bars, temples and restaurants.

The Iolani Palace is the only royal palace on U.S. soil.

Take a look at Hawaii’s state fish at the Waikiki Aquarium and try to pronounce its name: humuhumunukunukuapuaa.
