It would be easy just to describe Mexico as just another sun destination, but that would be grossly unfair. While it is famous for its beaches – almost 20 million come each year, it is a country with breathtaking scenery, rich culture, renowned archaeological attractions, fine cuisine and eco-diversity. Your holiday in Mexico will likely include a good amount of beach time, but do venture away from the sand and surf to explore.
The country covers two million square kilometres so there is plenty of ground to cover. Nature and beach lovers flock to the Baja Peninsula, a popular resort area that delivers adventures by night (lively discos and pubs) and by day (sea kayaking, whale watching and scuba diving). Along the Pacific coast, Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta are legendary destinations for sun seekers. Near the Caribbean coast, the Yucatan Peninsula attracts eco-minded visitors who spend their days exploring pristine jungles as well as Mayan archaeological sites, using a resort town like Cancun as a hub.
The Bajio is the centre of Mexico is famous for its silver mines, but though who venture off the beaten path will be rewarded with mountain vistas and villages with charming Spanish colonial architecture. And though you may usually fly through Mexico City en route, it’s a city that shouldn’t be missed. It has everything from museums to Aztec ruins. The only thing missing is the beach.
Mexico also has unexpected attractions that deserve to be on your holiday itinerary. Copper Canyon is one example. This remote destination is truly special and getting there is half the fun on the CHEPE (Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway). The train journey is ranked among the best in the world and takes you to heights of over 2,400 metres into the mountains. If your visit happens some time between November and March, come to the highlands of Michoacan to see the millions of butterflies who breed there. Or hike along a volcano in Toluca. Fun and sun is never far away on a holiday in Mexico.
