The Greek island of Santorini - also called Thira – is in the Cyclades group of islands and attracts visitors for its spectacular views, fertile landscape, dramatic volcanic features, romantic sunsets and swathes of dark sand beaches. Tourism has been a haphazard affair over the years. Once you’re off the island’s beaten track, this haphazardness gives a nice feel of being among surroundings that have changed little over thousands of years. Fira town - the island’s capital - clings to the edge of an enormous extinct volcanic crater. It has sensational sunset views setting off the sugar cubed white houses against the backdrop of black rock. Ira is the prettiest village on the island with two small harbours reached by steps and much of its accommodation is in restored old houses and is worth a visit on a holiday to Santorini.
