What does paradise look like? Here in the Seychelles, 1,500 kilometres off the coast of Africa, it’s covered in colourful blossoms, swaying palm trees, emerald mountains and soft, white sand that tickles your toes. If you’ve been to all the usual islands and crave something off-the-beaten path, something truly unique, the Seychelles, a group of about 115 islands, are a worthy choice as your next holiday destination.

While it offers everything you’d expect from a tropical island, it goes beyond the usual with a rich, diverse culture. The blend of French, African, Indian and Chinese touches all aspects of daily life, from music to cuisine. At quaint bars along the coast, you’ll be able to dance to native rhythms, French folk and pop tunes, while a balmy breeze flows from the ocean. Watch locals do the somber moutia, a typical dance of the Seychelles. And book some time to bask in the sun on some of the world’s most pristine beaches, like L’Union Estate in La Digue island. The hours and minutes slip by at a leisurely pace, far away from traffic noises and other urban trappings.

Experience Aride Island, an important nature reserve where you can have encounters with seabirds, giant tortoises, and tiny frogs. Vallee de Mai’s beauty is so legendary that it was once believed to be the Garden of Eden. The diverse flora and fauna of the islands is best explored with a leisurely hike and a camera in hand. Waterfalls, green valleys, grasslands and rocky peaks dot the landscape and give you the feeling that you are somewhere truly special. As the sun sets, gather with friends and sample Creole cuisine – flavoured with robust spices, coconut milk and other locally sourced ingredients. Raise a glass of Seybrew (the German-style lager of the island) and make a toast to this precious, tropical paradise.

The local handicrafts are perfect souvenirs. Pick up inexpensive batik textiles, basketware and pottery, as well as locally grown tea, cinnamon and vanilla.

The scent of wild orchids at the Botanical Gardens on Mahé, the largest of the islands, lingers in the air.

Islands, like La Digue, have a rustic charm like no other. With few cars and ox carts used as the principal mode of transportation, it’s like stepping back in time.
