As a gateway into Malaysia and other Asian countries, or as a holiday destination on its own, Singapore is a fascinating place unlike any other. It combines the best of east and west, with impressive modern architecture, bustling markets, efficient transportation, and old-world temples. It’s home to some of the best shopping, hotels, and cuisine around. For a relatively small island, just over 700 square kilometres, it is amazingly diverse and easy to navigate.
Singapore feels like many countries in one with its distinct neighbourhoods. Little India is an authentic slice of India with food hawkers (vendors), shops, pretty, painted houses, and temples. Stop and try a delicious curry served on a banana leaf, followed by sweet Indian desserts. Fish head curry is very popular here but you can find many other types as well. Chinatown has an eclectic array of activities, in addition to mall complexes, that attract visitors. It has mosques, contemporary art museums, and quaint boutiques that specialize in items like tea, herbal medicine, or electronics.
In the evening, there is plenty of amusements to be had. Take a trip via cable car to Sentosa Island, a kind of theme park that attracts locals and tourists alike, with great scenic views and a lively atmosphere. Its nightclubs have been known to hold wet and wild foam parties. Or visit the Singapore Zoo for its special night zoo program. Likely you’ll be able to join in on celebrations associated with many of Singapore’s festivals of Muslim, Chinese, Indian and Christian origin. The Dragon Boat Festival provides a good excuse to eat and party, while Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, illuminates the darkness and creates a magical atmosphere.
Dining on a pile of spicy black pepper crab, served on newspaper, is an experience not to be missed.
Sip a Singapore Sling cocktail where it was first created – the Raffles hotel.
You can really shop until you drop along Orchard Road, the main shopping street.
