South Africa has emerged from the apartheid years to become a top travel destination with something for everyone. Few countries offer so much in terms of magnificent wildlife, wonderful scenery, award winning food and wine, shopping and entertainment and an incredibly diverse people with a fascinating social and political history. South Africa also offers guaranteed sunshine when Europe is in the depths of winter. It is easy to get to. Direct overnight flights are available. And with little time difference there is no jet lag or upset to routines. Accommodation standards are good and English is widely spoken.

Winter sunshine, without having to travel through several time zones

Subtropical forests, white sand coast, and one of the richest floral kingdoms in the world

Nature. Where else can you find penguins and lions in one country? The South Africa safari experience

Programmes for all budgets and tastes with family friendly safaris in non-malarial locations a speciality

Driving at night. Some roads in South Africa are poorly lit and carjackings have been reported. Flaunting money or expensive goods as crime can be a problem.

British nationals do not need to apply for a visa. A free entry permit sticker for up to 90 days is given on arrival. Passports must have at least one blank page for an entry stamp.

South Africa has one of the world’s highest averages for daily sunshine. Summer is characterised by hot weather - average 19.4C/67F in Johannesburg, 20C/68F Cape Town - often with afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are generally mild - 11.4C/52.5F in Johannesburg, 12.6C/54F Cape Town - and dry.

Flights from London to the country’s main airport in Johannesburg take approximately 12 hours.

Car hire is a good way to travel South Africa. Roads conditions are good but distances can be long. An international driving permit is required.
