If you’re an experienced traveler who is looking for the latest hot holiday destination, Vietnam is it. A new generation of visitors is discovering the richness of its culture, its history and traditions, making Vietnam a new degree of recognition as an up-and-coming country for tourism. It still has authentic charm that has not been spoiled by over-development. The local people are genuinely interested in connecting with foreigners and helping them appreciate their country.

An exploration of Vietnam must include Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). It is the country’s biggest city and one of the most fascinating. Throughout its history, other cultures have left their footprint on the city. Check out Notre Dame Cathedral, a French-built cathedral, or the Chinese temples in Cholon, the Chinatwon district of old Saigon. Reunification Palace, the former presidential palace of south Vietnam, is worth a visit, too, for its retelling of the union between north and south. Visit the Ben Thanh market and pick up local food specialties, designer knock-offs, and souvenirs. The items to look for include silk textiles, woodcarvings, lacquered painting and vintage propaganda posters. Haggling is part of the game, so be prepared to bargain politely with vendors and have fun with the process.

In the north, around Hanoi, Ha Long Bay is a World Heritage site that has magnificent views of picturesque and adjacent towns. The central coast, near Hue, is a stunning seacoast town that was once home to Vietnamese kings. The Central Highlands are hilly and wild but this is the area you want to go if you like soft adventure. It’s the south that most people are familiar with. It has the Mekong Delta and emerald green ice paddies. Your holiday in Vietnam should include some time to explore the country by boat. It’s the waterways that are vital to Vietnam and they showcase all the best of the country, from excellent seafood to welcoming villagers.

When you don’t have much time or money, pho (noodle soup) is a perfect quick meal that satisfies appetites nicely.

Mui Ne is a bustling resort area that gives you access to stunning beaches and relaxation.

Sip the local wine. Grapes are produced in the Dalat region and are turned into very good, and inexpensive, wine.
