For many of us the river Rhine, Berlin – once the site of the infamous Berlin wall – Lederhosen wearing accordion players, beer and medieval castles frame our perceptions of the country. But Germany is far removed from this stereotype. Today it is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. The lowland regions are criss-crossed with rivers, museums and galleries stuffed with art treasures and vast unspoiled outdoor green places. Germany is in the centre of Europe between the North Baltic Seas and the Alps and is made up of sixteen states. Holidays in Germany offer a huge range of interesting activities. Northern Germany’s gem-like small historic towns and Bavaria’s stunning mountain resorts are two of the country’s attractions not visited by many tourists.

Germany is a full member of the EU (European Union). EU citizens do not need a visa only a valid passport if your stay is no longer than three months.

The country has a temperate climate. Summers on the north coast are warm rather than hot (20°C/68°F) and temperatures in the cities and towns are warmer (23°C/73°F). The eastern part of the country has harsher winters (-3°C/28°F). Rain falls throughout the year, the heaviest being in the north and in the Alps.

Flights to Germany from the UK take approximately one hour thirty minutes.

Car hire is available throughout the country and there is an excellent network of toll free routes and well-maintained roads. The same road traffic regulations apply as in most European countries.
