Cortina d'Ampezzo, to give the resort its full name, is Italy's most famous and stylish ski destination. It hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and is now well established and well heeled. It's also a pretty resort with a pedestrianised centre and stunning backdrop of the Dolomites.

First timers, early intermediate skiers and sophisticates are likely to get the most out of ski holidays in Cortina. More accomplished skiers should head elsewhere.

Be sure you have adequate insurance which covers winter sports and both rescue and repatriation in the event of an accident.

If you are driving in Italy you must use dipped headlights during the day on motorways and major roads. Drink driving rules are strict. Using mobile phones when you are driving is prohibited.

Yes, there's a terrain park with ramps, rails and a half-pipe. The park is best suited to intermediate riders.

Quite a lot. Up on the mountain you can try your hand - or foot – at snowshoeing or go cross-country skiing. For the less energetic there is shopping and the beauty and fitness centres.

December to April

Venice is the nearest airport to Cortina and flights to Venice from London take around one and a half hours. Allow two hours for the drive from Venice to Cortina although exact transfer times depend on road and weather conditions.

It's easy to hire a car at Venice airport but consider whether you want the hassle of driving and parking. Resort buses are free when you have a lift pass.
