Amsterdam and the Amstel Botel

I recently enjoyed a short break in Amsterdam and stayed in the Amstel Botel.

It was a quick jaunt over from Edinburgh with Easy Jet and no complaints about the flight; well organised and all on time. I got to Schipol and straight on the train to Central Station. It’s 3.90 euros and by far the best and quickest way into the centre. The train station is right in the middle of the town. I had a quick look round and then got on the free ferry at the back of the station that takes you on the ten minute ride to the Botel. The ferries run every 15 minutes at peak time and every 30 minutes thereafter. The Botel one runs from 07.00-00.30 but you can also get the other one which runs all night and the free shuttle from the hotel picks you up.

I got to the Hotel and the room was small as you would expect from a boat but very clean. Friendly staff and we got a free drink for liking their Facebook page! A pint was 3.90 on the boat which was good compared to the centre of the town.

I did all the touristy things. A canal boat trip was nine euros for the hour trip and was very interesting. I also visited all the museums and the red light district which must be seen to be believed. There are some decent restaurants which were reasonably priced but alcohol is expensive but surprisingly wine was not. Pints ranged from six to nine euros and spirit and a mixer was a bit more. This was in the Dam Square/red light area although even in other central areas it was the same.

Back on the boat I enjoyed a good night’s sleep and a great hot buffet breakfast. The boats run on the hour and half hour but I’d recommend having a coffee and cake in the lovely cafe at the ferry terminal next to the boat.

In summary, Amsterdam is a great short city break with lots to see. The Botel is also worth a try. It’s a great price and it was fun getting the short ferry ride over and its totally free. If you fancy giving it a visit, get in touch and I will tell you more.
