My Travel Diaries

Gorgeous Grenada

Sunday 11th May 2008

5 Stars

Four of us went to Grenada, three travel agents, Ann, Chris and I and my husband, Jim.

As soon as we arrived, we had no problem finding a friendly taxi driver. He told us a lot of information on the way as he is also a tour guide. It was a short drive to Grand Anse which was 16 USD for 4 of us.

On both occasions I have stayed on the beautiful Grand Anse Bay, the longest and most popular beach on the island with its soft sand dotted with seagrape trees and the azure blue sea.

Every morning we swam in the inviting Caribbean Sea at 6.30 am when it was quiet. The sea was lovely at any time from dawn till dusk and at high or low tide.

Grenada is mountainous and has a rainforest and is famous for its flowers, so an island tour is highly recommended to see more than just the beach. Roger, our tour guide was excellent and took us through Gouyave, famous for its fish fry, Concord Falls, Dougaldston Spice Boucan, Belmont Plantation where lunch was included, Leaper’s Hill, River’s Rum Distillery and Grand Etang, the bottomless lake.

Chris hired a car and took all of us to Lance aux Epines where Calabash has its own beach and then we had lunch at La Sagesse nature reserve. In the evening we went to Morne Rouge, famous for its sunsets.

As it was our 30th Wedding Anniversary, Jim and I dined at True Blue Bay which has a very romantic setting and the food is divine. We also had flowers and champagne at our hotel.

Grenada has some of the best food in the Caribbean. Grenada is famous for its spice, particularly nutmeg and cinnamon, so food is rich with flavours and of course, is spicy. There is a reasonable choice for vegetarians. Even the top restaurants at Spice Island, Calabash, Blue Horizons and True Blue Bay are extremely good value and at much lower prices than in the UK. You can also eat fast food very cheaply.

It’s been five years since I last visited Grenada and a lot has changed since the 2004 hurricane. Most of the hotels have been fully refurbished and now the island is even better than before.

Grenada is suitable for couples, families, celebrations, nature lovers, hikers, divers, foodies and anyone looking for a relaxing holiday, not so good for those wanting lively nightlife as Grenada’s nightlife is low key nor is it particularly good for shopping.
