My Travel Diaries
Oktoberfest is an annual event, starting in September of each year, and lasting for 3 weeks. When you arrive you will be bowled over by the sheer size of the event. As well as the numerous beer tents (there are at least 14 big beer tents, some of which can seat up to 6000 people inside), there are numerous small tents and a full size fairground with roller coasters and rides that compare to the best to be found at UK theme parks. And the atmosphere is fun, busy and good natured. The German nation certainly know how to celebrate the art of beer drinking, and add to this thousands of people dressed in traditional German dress (dirdl’s for the ladies, and lederhosen for the men) and you have a recipe for a fantastic weekend.
If you are planning a trip, you are advised to book your flights and accommodation a long time in advance as both sell quickly. Furthermore, and to get the most out of your visit, you should pre-book a table in one of the beer tents. Reservations are for a table of ten, and cost about £35 per person which includes a food voucher and a litre of beer (this will vary depending on what tent you book). And of course, when in the tent you will find live music (many tents with the traditional German ‘oompah’ bands).
Munich itself is a pretty city, and it is a shame that we did not have time to explore. Many Medieval buildings survive, the shops are modern, and the food to be found in restaurants and street cafes is hearty. You are also assured of a warm welcome from the locals who are very hospitable.
A first rate experience that will have you singing and dancing in the beer halls. I can book a complete package for you to include the entrance to the beer tents, and who knows, maybe I'll see you there this comiing year!
