My Travel Diaries
Located only 45 minutes from Gerona and 2 hours from Barcelona, Ila Franc remains one of the very few unspoilt spanish coastal towns left. It has only 5 hotels but numerous apartments either on the sea front or heading up into the hills.
The beautiful beach is regularly looked after and there is a lovely marina for the local fishing and diving boats.
You can walk to the neighbouring bays of Calella or a short drive to Timariu. There is also a road train that takes you up to the lighthouse where there are magnificent views of the bay and Ila franc.
My family and I stayed in an apartment at the top of a hill which had a communal pool, so it was a steep walk down everyday, however you could drive it, so it may be worth hiring a car. None of the hotels actually have pools so the beach is your only option.
There is a waterpark located around 30 minutes away, you can either drive or get a local bus there from a neighbouring town, palafrugell.
In the evening, we got a cool breeze, so it was lovely to sit at one of the beach front hotel bars. The children could play right in front of us on the beach.
There is very little evening entertainment, other than one nightclub. The evenings are centred around the various restaurants. The main tourists of the town are British, German and local Spanish. It is a fairly exclusive resort so you tend to get a better class of clientele here. I never had to reserve a sunbed with my towel.
I would certainly recommend this resort to someone that is looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle of commercialised towns, it has a lot of charm and you instantly feel relaxed.
