My time on board Cunard Queen Mary 2 - Part Two

A common comment that often comes up when I suggest a Cunard cruise is that it will be very formal and purely focused on an older clientele.

The truth is anything but!

I took a video whilst onboard of the Queens Room one evening to really highlight this. The Queens Room is stunning and has the largest dance floor at sea and the night I took the video was big band night. Just to add, this location is used for Zumba classes, Line Dancing, Introduction to fencing (yes, you can learn to fence onboard) and various ballroom dance classes throughout the day.

The dance floor was full of lovely people ballroom dancing and enjoying the live band.

Behind is Queens Room is G32, the nightclub where the silent disco was taking place.

Both were very popular (the silent disco filled up after I took the video). In fact, many who had been ballroom dancing to the band came and joined the silent disco later. All ages, couples, friends, young, older, all had an amazing night!

This was the same on most evenings. I really enjoyed watching the dancing in Queens Room then going for a boogie in the night club. If you are a ballroom dancer, or would like to learn but may not have friends who enjoy the same, dance leaders are onboard each cruise and are wonderful at making sure you have a truly lovely time. Plus, it is a very social area and Cunard host regular solo cruise meet ups.

If like me you also thought that Cunard wasn’t really for you because it is too formal and you don’t want to really dress up for dinner every evening, then I can assure this is not the case.

Cunard isn’t “too formal”, in fact we had two gala evenings (black and white theme and a masquerade ball theme which was great fun). These were the only two formal evenings out of 7 (and even then, if dressing for dinner wasn’t my thing, I’d have been quite comfortable in more casual clothes enjoying my meal in the pub or Kings Grill instead!).

I have included some descriptions of the “suggested” dress codes in the pictures but I really must stress that none of us ever felt over or underdressed and those that wanted to wear tiaras and sequins were very much embraced too!

Queen Mary 2 has to be one of the most relaxed and friendly ships I have ever sailed on. From the minute I stepped onboard there was no rushing around, no first day “buffet madness” that I normally experience on every cruise and I spoke to so many interesting people. All ages, all different backgrounds and all having a marvellous time!

The 4.30am alarm call on our last morning was completely worth it to see the Statue of Liberty as we sailed into New York (forgive the mist on the pictures, there was a thunder storm taking place in the distance). Arriving with no jet lag is another major bonus.

It felt strange to be back on land after 7 glorious days at sea onboard Cunard Queen Mary 2 and I 100% understand why so many people do both the East and West Transatlantic.

To summarise, I will definitely do this crossing again and will take my family. There were many children onboard and there are children’s clubs which are age appropriately kitted out. I got talking to two teenage girls one day and asked if they had got bored and they gave a resounding “not at all” they were really enjoying themselves too.

The prices at the moment across all Cunard sailings are excellent. This includes not only the iconic transatlantic sailing but also the Med, Alaska, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, USA & Canada or the British Isles. Queen Anne the new ship who launches next year is already selling very well. The 400th Transatlantic sailing takes place in August next year and this will also sell out quickly.
