My Travel Diaries

Turkey activity holiday

Monday 19th September 2011

4 Stars

Club Adakoy near Marmaris, which was Neilson’s newest resort in their Beachclub range, welcomed us late on a Monday night with a cool refreshing fruit punch…...just what was needed after our journey there from Gatwick.

At the welcome meeting the following morning, we prebooked some activities for the week, and whilst I booked onto a windsurfing course and fancied a spot of waterskiing, Becs my fiancée, decided to concentrate more on land based activities, and decided to try some tennis lessons for the first time.

My first windsurfing lesson started that morning; I had finally plucked up courage to give it a go. After a theory lesson from the very knowledgeable instructor, I was in the water and frantically trying to get to grips with putting the theory into practice. Not easy I can tell you, as I seemed to spend more time falling off than on the board - however, my first hour lesson was great fun but energy sapping!

That afternoon I was also drafted into the waterpolo team, but despite my best efforts, our team lost 7-3 - it was that close!

Next morning I had windsurfing lesson number two and was slowly improving. Becs by now was perfecting her serving technique at tennis and was feeling confident. However, the afternoon activities were somewhat curtailed by the storm which swept in, bringing with it heavy rain and quite spectacular lightning.

Thursday morning and the weather just about held out for me to squeeze in windsurfing lesson number three. Another storm rolled in after lunch which unfortunately put pain to further activities for the day. However, I did manage to get some good pictures of the resultant rainbows.

That evening, we took the water taxi across the bay to see the bright lights and big yachts of Marmaris. Every alleyway seemed to lead to the bazaar where you can buy all manner of fake designer goods, at a fraction of the cost, although be warned, your bartering skills will be truly tested. There were plenty of lovely promenade restaurants to choose from here, with some great seafood on offer.

Friday and at last the storms had abated, and we were back to clear blue skies and temperatures of 30-35°C - now that is more like it! It was a busy day, with my final windsurfing lesson, a sea kayaking safari and my first attempt at waterskiing. All went well, and I even managed to stand up whilst waterskiing, using the beginners bar attached to the side of the speedboat.

Saturday and apart from another waterskiing session in the afternoon, and Bec’s final tennis lesson, we decided to take a walk up the steep hill out of resort, to visit the cave. Make sure that you take plenty of water with you if you decide to do this, as the hill will sap the strength out of your legs, but the views at the top are simply breathtaking, and well worth it.

My waterskiing adventure that afternoon culminated in me actually waterskiing without the aid of the beginners bar, for about 10 seconds. Pity there is no photo to prove it!

Saturday evening was a much more relaxing affair, shopping in the bazaar in Marmaris, and finishing off at a local restaurant right in the heart of the market streets. You can’t go to Turkey without trying a kebab, and we had the best ever at The Marmaris Corner……highly recommended.

Final full day and we decided to take up the offer of a cat joyride with some newfound friends of ours, and what fun it was. Whizzing across the bay, and even becoming airborne briefly, was a real thrill and truly exhilarating, in the small dart cats.

Sea kayaking, swimming, and some serious sunbathing occupied the rest of the day, and we were grateful for our final night dinner at the resort restaurant, followed by the “awards presentation” at the beach bar, which was great fun.

Monday, and although we were leaving later today, Becs and I had a gentle introduction to stand up paddle boarding, which is the newest watersport to hit the scene. It is actually quite easy, and very relaxing, and we both regretted not trying it earlier in the week, but it will keep for another occasion.

Whether you are an experienced watersport enthusiast or simply keen to try something new, the resort offered something for everyone, both families and couples alike.

Would I do it again and recommend it to others?

You bet I would!
