Sustainable luxury among the treetops of Bali

‘A different way of being’ in an adults-only setting – that’s the promise given to you by Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape – a relatively new resort on the laidback Indonesian island of Bali, offering a delicious blend of nature with sustainable design in a lush wilderness area north of Ubud. Set in a tranquil enclave surrounded by rice paddies and jungle, next to the Ayung River and waterfall, it has gorgeous views of the majestic seven peaks.

Experience indoor-outdoor living

The adults-only Buahan has a ‘no walls, no doors’ concept throughout its communal areas and its 16 balés (villas). For instance, its Open Kitchen and Living Room have both been designed to foster a sense of community. Each balés provides a unique location surrounded by endless layers of greenery to enhance your connection with nature, as well as spacious indoor-outdoor living areas which have stunning 180° views and an openness to the sounds of nature.

To immerse yourself deeper into nature, book a stay in one of the recently upgraded Buahan Valley Pool Bales. These offer breathtaking views over the Balinese jungle and are perfectly situated to watch the sun rise and set each day. There are also two exclusive new signature villas: the ‘Above the Waterfall’ and ‘Seven Peaks’ pool balés, each with extraordinary views. In the first, you can relax and fall asleep to the hypnotic sound of the cascading waterfall, while the second has panoramic views of the seven peaks.

The decor is unconventional, unique, and truly charming, using materials including re-purposed ulin (iron wood from boat jetties), and featuring hand-carved wooden headboards, hand-smithed copper bathtubs, and natural-dye soft furnishings – all conceived in collaboration with Singapore-based creative studio Parable. The buildings themselves, designed to preserve the surrounding environment and nature, are by local architect Gede Kresna, who is known for his insistence on sustainable Balinese design and environmentally friendly structures that highlight the resort's relationship with the surrounding community.

Embrace Balinese wellness

The Toja Spa celebrates the wellbeing traditions of Buahan village and the surrounding areas in a unique open garden setting. The spa’s signature Buahan Bliss treatment harnesses the riches of the island as well as local wisdom, starting with an exfoliation with a natural, earthy brush, moving on to a stimulating massage inspired by the flowing streams of sacred rivers to improve the circulation, and ending in a warming wrap using local herbs and spices.

Embedded within the property are secret Hideaway Spots – garden sanctuaries for meditation, reading, or simply taking a moment to pause and be at one with nature. When you want to explore, there are daily complimentary shuttles to Ubud to immerse yourself in local life, culture, and festivities, plus a calendar of daily, weekly, and monthly events, plus experiences centred around the themes of nature, discovery, and community.

Dining here is based on a zero-waste farm-to-table concept – everything comes from within a one-hour drive of the property, and 70% of the menu is plant-based. The hotel’s own Botanist Bar is also focused on natural local ingredients, including botanical-infused drinks.
