The Great White Continent: Buenos Aires – Ushuaia

24 November 2022 - £9,999 per person or 8 January 2024 - £12,499 per person

After spending the night in Buenos Aires, the ‘Paris of South America’, you’ll fly to Ushuaia for your Antarctic adventure. Here you’ll spend five full days kayaking amongst massive icebergs, trekking to penguin colonies, navigating the notorious Drake Passage, and watching for whales from the comfort and safety of a Zodiac.

Your adventure takes in too many marvels to list in full, but they include the mysterious Aitcho Islands, home to chinstrap and gentoo penguins that can be seen porpoising offshore, the Antarctic Sound with its ‘Iceberg Alley’ of vast tabular icebergs sometimes miles in length and towering vertically hundreds of feet above the sea, and the Polish Antarctic research station Arktowski, where field work is done at the two large Adélie and gentoo penguin rookeries in the vicinity.

There’s also Brown Bluff with it rust-coloured, iron-rich rocks that form its cliffs above the beach - part of an extinct and rare tuya volcano that volcano that erupted beneath the glacier a million years ago. Due to its large penguin population, Brown Bluff can be a great place to view hunting leopard seals. Another geological wonder of Antarctica is Deception Island with is black sand beaches in Whalers Bay and its regular signs of thermal activity, including clouds of steam rising along the shoreline.

A voyage to Antarctica entails crossing the legendary 1000km-wide Drake Passage, named for English explorer Sir Francis Drake, with wildlife-spotting opportunities including Wilson’s petrels, soaring albatrosses and occasional whale and dolphin appearances.

Past these and many other natural wonders, you’ll arrive at Ushuaia, considered the southernmost city on earth, with spectacular trekking in nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park and colourful stories and historical heritage at The End of the World Museum. You’ll also be able to tour the Ukrainian research station of Vernadsky in the Argentine Islands - one of the friendliest research stations in Antarctica, welcoming all visitors to its scientific laboratories and equipment storage rooms, plus its traditional-style English pub - the southernmost in the world!
