My Travel Diaries

Magical Mauritius

Monday 11th July 2011

4 Stars

Mauritius is always somewhere I'd wanted to visit, having arranged many holidays to this destination over the years I really wanted to experience it first-hand.

I was lucky to be offered a trip with Carrier for seven nights staying at four hotels and visiting over 15 properties so I knew this was going to be a very busy trip.

We started off by using the facilities of the Air Mauritius Lounge at London Heathrow. We then boarded our flight. We travelled economy class and having flown with many other airlines I have to say I was disappointed with the whole experience, poor service, food and entertainment.

What the airline lacked the hospitality of all the hoteliers and ground handlers more than compensated for. The island was really pretty, with gorgeous white soft sand beaches, azure blue seas, botanical flora and fauna and amazing food.

With a colourful history Mauritius has been influenced by the Dutch, French and British and is famous for the Dodo - the flightless bird that became extinct some 300 years ago.

Our first hotel was the Dinarobin. This hotel was very peaceful with a lovely beach and lots of facilities for couples and families including the Club at Dinarobin which at a supplement provides exclusive services and use of a Club Lounge with complimentary snacks and drinks. I stayed in a junior suite which was very well appointed. We ate in the beach side restaurant under a thatched roof; I tried the local fish which was delicious.

The next hotel we stayed in was the Maradiva Villas (an all villa hotel) - here I had a beautiful villa with a lounge area, full bathroom and rain shower plus my own small swimming pool, outside kitchen and double day bed! However this hotel really lacked any personality, there was no atmosphere and none of us felt comfortable.

We then travelled across the island to the One and Only Le Saint Geran. This hotel was fabulous, although it doesn't have the different types of rooms that some other hotels have it was so warm, relaxing and friendly. It has so many facilities especially for families - the children’s club was amazing - they were all wearing chef’s hats and aprons and doing some baking when we visited! There are also loads for teenagers, as well as a fabulous spa and beautiful beach. We ate in the Royal Villa, a three bedroom en suite villa with full size swimming pool and butler. The food was exceptional.

Our last hotel was Le Touessrok - a lovely property again with a great atmosphere on a lovely beach. Each room has butler service - mine ironed my clothes! The hotel has lots to offer families and couples alike, we ate in the Indian restaurant and the food was a sort of modern cosmopolitan themed menu - fab! The rooms however were a little tired compared to some of the other hotels and needed up dating.

Other hotels I visited:

1. The Residence - a Colonial style hotel with a lovely light and open air feel. It has an enormous pool and lots of facilities including a spa, gym and butler service.
2. The Oberoi - amazing!! Everything about this property oozes luxury from the beachside setting to the glorious gardens. The manager here spends time with his guests and attends to their every whim.
3. Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita - beautiful! All rooms have a private plunge pool; the hotel has everything you could wish for and more including a complimentary 18-hole golf course.
4. Constance Le Prince Maurice - this hotel is set on a peninsula so quite isolated and very very private. This hotel has a floating restaurant - very romantic.
5. Constance Belle Mare Plage Resort and Villas - Quiet a large hotel with over 235 rooms/suites and villas. It has 7 restaurants; the beach here is protected by a coral reef - great for swimmers.
6. Shanti Maurice - a small boutique hotel with lovely gardens. With its attention to detail and high level of service - it’s a great choice for couples and honeymooners wanting the ultimate in privacy and luxury.

I loved Mauritius; with so many hotels it’s easy to select one to suit different clients. It’s a great honeymoon destination particularly if booked as part of a twin centre.

Top Tip: Most of the hotels offer great half board packages and free nights - check with tour operators. Don't fly with Air Mauritius.
