As a travel agent, I aim to provide my clients with the support to make sustainable choices when travelling and also commit to follow this pledge when take both business and personal travel. Treating the Destination with Respect: I pledge to treat the destination as a guest, not a tourist, by respecting the local culture, traditions, and environment. Reducing Single-Use Plastic: I will limit my single-use plastic by using reusable water bottles and shopping bags to minimize plastic waste and its impact on the environment. Participating in Cultural Activities: I commit to taking part in cultural activities to learn about and share traditions, respecting and celebrating the local culture and heritage. Considering Carbon Emissions: I will consider my carbon emissions by looking for alternative transport options, such as trains instead of planes, and embracing slow travel by taking fewer flights throughout the year. Supporting Local Businesses: I will support local businesses by choosing independent restaurants and gift shops that use local produce, thereby contributing to the local economy and community. Responsible Wildlife Tourism: I pledge never to visit wildlife attractions that are unethical and do not align with my animal welfare policy, ensuring the ethical treatment of animals in tourism. Our vision is that all animals encountered on a Travel Counsellors holiday are free from exploitation, neglect and cruelty. We support an end to the capture of animals from the wild for the purposes of entertainment, and we encourage the conservation of natural habitats and their wildlife. Travel Counsellors will not promote nor endorse any attractions that have animals in captivity, or where animals are kept for the sole purpose of entertainment. This does not include ‘protected areas’ such as national parks or reserves where animals are free to roam and express natural behaviours. Travel Counsellors customers will be encouraged to report bad practice where any of the guidelines outlined below are not adhered to. Five Freedoms Animal attractions and wildlife excursions will be measured against the Five Freedoms outlined in ABTA’s Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism. Feeding: There is an absence of prolonged hunger or thirst in all animals. Housing: All animals are kept in sufficient housing where they have access to comfort while resting, thermal comfort, and ease of movement. Health: There is absence of injury, disease, or pain induced by inappropriate housing or management. Behaviour: Animals are able to express natural behaviours, including social behaviours, in a positive emotional state, with positive human-animal relationship. Non-natural behaviours are not encouraged nor induced. Protection from Fear: There is an absence of general fear or distress, and animals are able to seek privacy or refuge. There is an absence of surgical or physical modification other than for genuine medical reasons, and animals are regularly checked by specialised veterinarians. Protection of Endangered Animals Animal attractions and wildlife excursions must comply with CITES requirements (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), which is legally binding. o Trade of elephants (live or dead) and elephant parts is illegal o Trade of tigers (live or dead) and tiger parts is illegal o Trade of primates (live or dead) and primate parts is illegal o Trade of marine animals (live or dead) and marine animal parts is illegal o Unless there is a conservation breeding program in place, elephants, tigers, primates and marine mammals should not be acquired from the wild Unless there is a conservation breeding program in place, elephants, tigers, primates and marine mammals should not be acquired from the wild Animals in the Wild Animal viewing and wildlife excursions where animals are in their natural environment or a protected area, will be measured against the following practices. o Rules and guidelines are in place to protect vulnerable ecosystems e.g. waste management o A safe distance should be kept, with disturbing sounds kept to a minimum o For marine wildlife, a vessel distance of minimum 100m to any whale and 50m to any dolphin must be maintained o Feeding should be limited, encouraging animals to practice natural feeding behaviours e.g. hunting and foraging o Free-roaming animals in wild should never be touched or picked up Working animals in tourism can include: o Equine including horses, donkeys and ponies, used to pull/carry loads or people o Camels, used to transport goods or people o Sled dogs, used to transport goods or people The promotion of practices involving working animals will be measured by animal welfare in relation to the principles of the Five Freedoms, in addition to: o Animals should have regular rest periods of at least 1 hour between working periods o Animals should only work within their physical capabilities (loads are not in excess of 15% of their body weight) o Equipment should be well maintained, fit appropriately, and removed during rest periods o Tethering is discouraged and should be limited to a few hours a day. Animals should be able to exercise movement without putting tension on the tether, and reach basic resources such as food, water and shade o Young, pregnant, ill or injured animals should not be ridden or required to carry loads We recognise that many working animals in tourism provide the sole income for their owner and their families, and that this has been a long tradition within their communities. We support the training and education of these communities to ensure a sustainable livelihood whilst providing appropriate care and management of healthy, working animals. Unacceptable Practices Travel Counsellors consider the following practices as unacceptable, both in captive environments and in the wild. o Animal performances based on non-natural behaviour e.g. elephant parades o Animals used as photographic props involving bad practice e.g. tiger declawing o Animals used for begging e.g. dancing bears, snake charming o Animal breeding for commercial trade o Trophy hunting o Unlicensed zoos Travel Counsellors Animal Welfare Policy has been established on guidance taken from The Travel Foundation, ABTA, CITES and the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.

Switzerland, is a dream destination for me and has been on my bucket-list for as long as I can remember. The breath-taking landscapes, charming towns, and beautiful lakes, makes it one of the best destinations to explore. The city makes for a perfect Christmas getaway, the iconic huge tree that sits at the base of the Rockefeller Centre and a chance to enjoy the famous ice-skating spot. Walk the streets of the city and take a ride on the vintage Jane’s Carousel on the East River-front, before strolling over Brooklyn Bridge. Of course the ultimate magical Christmas experience would be a stay at The Plaza, the attention to detail is incredible, even down to a dressing-up closet for the children. If you’re looking for a bucket-list destination, then look no further, Cappadocia in Turkey has just right amount of activity and tranquillity to leave you feeling full of travel happiness. With a connecting flight from Istanbul, Cappadocia makes for a great stop on a multi-centre trip. I’d highly recommend linking it with a beach spot to unwind after the early starts Cappadocia will no-doubt bring you. We arrived on an evening flight and were taken to our hotel, the stone building with the hint of incense is what I was expected when arriving in the lobby and it was straight to bed, ready for an early start. It is recommended to get up around 30 minutes before sunrise, as this is when the sky will start to fill with the hot air balloons, this is the only time they will fly each day, as it’s when the temperatures are at their coolest and it’s safest to fly. Being October, it was around a 6:30am start when we head to the rooftop of the hotel. Most, if not all, hotels will feature a roof terrace and this is a great spot to capture the views of the balloons in action. Alternatively, Cappadocia is filled with valleys and their mountain tops are where many would head for the perfect photo opportunities. Our first stop after a traditional Turkish breakfast, was the Gerome Open Air Museum where you will find the remains of many churches that were cut into the volcanic rock during the middle ages. The structures were impressive and worth a photo stop, particularly if the 10th century history is of interest. The afternoon we chose one of the 3 main valleys to hike, choosing between Love Valley, Pigeon Valley and Rose Valley. We chose Love Valley and I really felt the love when I made it to the end! The approach to the start gave me memories of the Grand Canyon in the US, with its sweeping mountains covering the views, once we started the decent into the valley, I quickly realised this was not for the faint hearted. The smooth rock where small natural pathways had formed, were mixed with flat surfaces and those with loose stones and grit, making walking shoes essential for safe footing. The guide did mentioned during the spring and early summer, it can be a little unsafe to do these hikes due to the mud and wet surface. There was a mixture of concentration to stay on my feet and joy as we take in the incredible natural rock formations and views of the valley, but felt amazing to reach the end and know we had achieved something great. The afternoon was spent relaxing in a rooftop restaurant enjoying the views and a much deserved glass of local wine! The next day was an early start for our hot air balloon flight, with a pick up of 6am, to arrive at the take-off spot ahead of sunrise. We arrive to see our balloon being inflated, deep inside one of the valleys. There are usually two flight options, the standard and the deluxe, the main difference being you are in the air for longer on the deluxe experience. As we take off and slowly glide through the valley the sun is starting to rise and we start to climb. The sky is filled with hot air balloons and the Cappadocia valleys and orange sky are the backdrop, the silence and stillness as you glide through the sky is so calming, there is a real feeling of peace as you take in this unforgettable view. Back at the hotel for breakfast, after what has to be one of my best travel memories, we soon head out for the day. First stop is the Kaymakli Underground City, Cappadocia is famous for their many underground cities, going as deep as 85 metres underground! Well worth a visit, exploring through the tunnels of the city. Not so good if you struggle with small spaces as some crouching is involved, but we were able to explore enough within around 30 minutes and it was great to see something so unique. The day continued with a visit to the iconic Fairy Chimneys, in Monks Valley. A view point of Uchisar Castle from the lovely Lavanta Panorama Café, a perfect spot for a photo opportunity. Finally, we found our mountain top ready for sunset and it did not disappoint, the perfect way to end an amazing day in Cappadocia. The evening we found ourselves a gorgeous restaurant tucked away behind the main road, with stunning views of the town and the lights highlighting landmarks of this place full of character and unique charm. Our final day was spent having a wonder through town at the local market and souvenir shops, before finding a café to kickback, take in the surroundings and reflect on the incredible few days. The town is a small enough to explore within a short time and doesn't involve much walking, just watch out for the uneven ground which adds to the charm of the Cappadocia experience. My top tips to make the most of your Cappadocia experience: - A hot air balloon flight is a must do! - Be prepared to wake early and make the most of the iconic scenery. - Pack your walking shoes, regular trainers won't cut it for the valleys. - Take a power bank and make sure your phone is charged for photos, trust me you will want to take lots. BUT remember to put it down at times and be in the moment, some of these sights you will only see once in a lifetime. - Have small change for toilet breaks, some places will charge a small fee, This was an unforgettable trip and the magic of the hot air balloons really does capture the soul!

Travelling solo is something I am often asked about, those thinking of taking a trip by themselves can find the process a little overwhelming. Having done lots of travelling around the world alone and loving it, from the experiences I had and the way it totally changed my confidence and outlook on things. I thought I would share some top tips to consider when travelling solo… Book with the right company When travelling alone it is so important to have peace of mind that everything is taken care of and you have someone to turn to should you need them. Choosing the right agent who is always contactable is key. There are also some fantastic tour specialists, who put together great itineraries for solo groups. They can be as immersive or independent as you wish, but ultimately gives you that like minded group to explore the destinations with. Choosing the destination If it’s your first solo trip, something a little closer to home might feel a little more comfortable. Discover Europe, from it’s exciting cities and rivers to the peaceful countryside and coastlines. You can reach some of the most stunning destinations in as little as a 1.5 hour flight! Take some time to think about what you would like to experience and do on your holiday, then match it with an itinerary that suits you. Ask questions Having a travel advisor when booking a solo trip can be really useful, as you may find yourself thinking of all sorts of questions you may like to ask and it’s great having someone on hand who can share the knowledge and experiences they’ve had, to help with your planning and decision making. Also, getting on social media and joining groups for the destination you are going, you will often pick up some great tips on where to go and places to eat…and what to avoid! Doing things alone The thought of eating alone or being by yourself can feel daunting, but the best way to avoid that is choosing a solo group tour, where everyone is traveling solo, you quickly make friends with each other and never even have to think about dining alone. However, sometimes it is nice to be alone and a top tip I had was to carry my book, so if I did find myself alone, I could sit and enjoy a coffee or meal and relax with my book (in-between people watching, which is my favourite thing to do!) Immerse yourself I have often talked about how incredible my experiences were travelling solo. Meeting new people, doing activities I would never normally do, but thinking “go for it” and they turned out to be some of the best things I have ever done! You make such amazing memories and I found myself growing in confidence and just enjoying my surroundings. Phone stayed in the bag, unless taking a few photos, but just being totally in the moment was liberating!

Described as one of the best ways to see a country, immersing yourself in its culture and having the freedom and flexibility to be on your own schedule. A road-trip is fast becoming one of the most asked for trips, especially when visiting the USA. This blog takes you through some of the highlights of my road-trip of the West Coast of the USA. Flying into Los Angeles to begin the trip, we picked up our hire car, which of course had to be a Ford Mustang. In my mind, the only way to road-trip the US is in an iconic Ford Mustang. Los Angeles A few days spent in LA was enough, to take in the famous sights of Beverly Hills, stroll down the Walk of Fame, get a selfie in front of the Hollywood sign and capture the nightlife as you celebrity spot your way through the bars and clubs. A trip to the Warner Bros studios was a must, seeing the sets for some of the top rated TV shows on the planet and seeing where the magic happens, a very cool experience. LA has a very laid back vibe, feeling very cool, glamourous and all being close to the beach, helps to see why so many of the rich and famous love it so much. Las Vegas Taking a journey through Death Valley, heading to Las Vegas was exactly how you would imagine a USA road-trip to be, think long straight roads that disappear over the horizon, deserts and mountains either side of you, roadside diners and motels on route, you have the Death Valley experience. As we drive, we start to see the outline of a city appearing ahead, Las Vegas. Discover the Strip and the iconic hotels of the Venetian, New York New York, Caesars Palace and of course the Bellagio, with its famous fountain display. Getting a photo taken in front of the Las Vegas sign just south of Mandalay Bay and if you’re in the party mood, a pool party at the classic Flamingo hotel. Just outside of the city itself lies one of the most famous National Parks, found on many bucket-lists, the Grand Canyon. We woke early to take a helicopter ride through the Canyon, flying deep into the rocks and views of the Colorado River at sunrise, sights and memories that still give me goose bumps today. Yosemite National Park Around 6 hours drive from Las Vegas lies Yosemite National Park. The journey itself offers some amazing viewpoints, more discovery of Death Valley, its mountain ranges and historical hot-spots. As you drive into Yosemite National Park, you will be mesmerised by the changing scenery and seasons the deeper you travel. Famous for its giant ancient sequoia trees, the iconic vista of towering Bridalveil Fall and the granite cliffs of El Captain and Half Dome, Yosemite is a true gem and highlight of a West Coast road-trip. Various hiking and walking trails allow you to immerse yourself in some of the most incredible natural sights, leaving you speechless. We chose a wooden cabin to spend our 2 nights at Yosemite, heading into Yosemite Village for local restaurants and bars to refuel for the following day of exploring. San Francisco The iconic Golden Gate Bridge was one of the first stops I wanted to make when we arrived to San Francisco. We hired bikes and rode through Golden Gate Park exploring the area before arriving at the bridge, it was our second attempt as our first day the weather was cloudy, but when the blue skies appeared it was an incredible view. Later that day we chose to take the tram around the city, the steep hills and roads were just like how I remembered them from the movies. We arrived at Fisherman’s Wharf, exploring Pier 39 and the seals resting spot, before boarding the ferry across to Alcatraz Prison where we had a guided tour of the island and within the prison itself. A very surreal experience and despite the warm weather in the city, found the breeze coming across the water made the island feel very cold. Santa Monica Our final stop on the trip was back down to Santa Monica. We chose to take the drive back to LA from San Francisco, just for the love of the roads and all the landmarks we could take in on route. Our last night found us at Santa Monica pier, where we enjoyed the nightlife, vendor foods and found the sign for reaching the end of Route 66. While our route didn’t quite cover the famous Route 66 trip, we ticked off some major bucket-list destinations and saw some beautiful locations both city and of mother nature herself. One of the most memorable travel experiences to date and that was only a start…there is still so much to explore!

Looking for some travel inspiration for 2022? As the travel restrictions start to ease and the world opens up again, our travel plans can finally come to life. The first and, I think, most exciting part is choosing where to go! After months of daydreaming about our holiday plans, it seems the choices are now bigger and better than ever, with many wanting to tick off those bucket list destinations, myself included. So look no further, here are the top travel destinations for 2022, that you should be looking out for: 1. Japan The bright lights, innovative culture and design, alongside the historic traditions and temples within the mountains, is what makes Japan a must see destination for 2022. One of the most popular times of the year to visit is during the cherry blossom season, which is usually around March to May. The city of Atami, which is around 90 minutes from Tokyo, is just one of the locations where you will find Atami-zakura bloom along a peaceful stream and it’s every bit as magical as you would imagine it to be. 2. The Maldives Ultimate luxury escapes, look no further than The Maldives. Flying over small islands, surrounded by white sands and the crystal clear blue waters, as your seaplane takes you to your very own spot in paradise, makes for a trip of dreams. Whether its your own water villa with a private pool and steps into your own spot in the ocean or a luxury beach villa where you open your terrace doors and can step directly on the white sand and stroll along the beach, each island offers something special. The vibrant corals and sea-life make it a haven for those wanting to explore the ocean, not forgetting the array or water-sports available to those who want to enjoy the turquoise waters from above. With hundreds of islands to choose from, catering to all budgets and travellers, it’s no wonder The Maldives is a hot destination for 2022. 3. Egypt Egypt is already making its mark on travel for 2022, as it will be 100 years since British Egyptologist Howard Carter opened the door to the hidden Tomb of Tutankhamun, in November of 1922. Giving us one of the most incredible archaeological discoveries of the world and best-preserved pharaonic tomb ever to be found in the Valley of the Kings. This, alongside the anniversary of almost 200 years since Jean-Francois Champollion and his deciphering of the mysterious Rosetta Stone, means Egypt will be busy marking these very special occasions right across the country. Combine these incredible sites with a stay in Sharm El Sheikh, will give you the opportunity to relax and unwind, while being a part of a historic year for Egypt. 4. Norway One of the most beautiful destinations in the world, with its breath-takingly dramatic mountains and coastlines, to its sustainable Scandinavian towns, it is hard not to fall in love with Norway. The Norwegian Fjords are always a big attraction, whether you choose to do it by cruise ship, allowing you to explore different parts of the country and somewhere new each day or if you choose to plan a trip by land. Either way, the impressing scenery is hard to beat. Not forgetting the wonderful capital city, with endless contemporary architecture making it one of Europe’s most stylish cities. And for that bucket-list moment, Norway is one of the best places to be for the Northern Lights, head up to the Arctic city of Alta, between November and March to be fascinated by the natural phenomenon, as Mother Nature puts on the best lights show on Earth! 5. South Africa After nearly 2 years of being in the same place, it comes as no surprise that South Africa and its incredible safari opportunities are making top travel destinations for 2022. Escaping into the wilderness, where the green and bush stretches as far as the eyes can see, watching the big 5 go about their day, is a moment never to be forgotten. Having an elephant creep up to your jeep as you start your morning game drive, to say hello or a lion guarding his family are moments you dream of. Not only is South Africa rich with safari experiences, there is also the vibrant and exciting city of Cape Town. An incredible city voted one of the best in the world with its traditional communities, fantastic vineyards, a treasure cave for foodie fans and beautiful picturesque locations makes for a perfect way to immerse yourself in South Africa.

It is a question I am often asked when booking cruising and while working on board, guests would ask for advice on what to do in each port, should they take an organised excursion from the ship or head out independently. So I am going to talk today about just that, shore excursion or independent days ashore. The first part to consider is the port of call, what would you like to see in that destination and are they easily accessible from the port. If you are looking to meander around the local port or town, perhaps have a coffee or an ice cream and enjoy some people watching before heading back to the ship for lunchtime and an afternoon relaxing by the pool or in a quiet spot with your book, then you can likely skip the planned excursions for the day. The same could apply if you are comfortable to leave the ship independently, often the taxis will be ready and waiting to take those independent guests to the beaches or on a local tour for a negotiable charge and the day is yours to do as you wish and spend as long as you wanted to in each spot. While I do enjoy this option, it does come with some considerations, such as ensuring you are back to the ship in time. Unlike a planned excursion from the ship, where the ship will wait should the tour be delayed, if you are independent, the ship will be required to keep to its scheduled departure, meaning you are in charge of keeping to your timing and trust that the driver will get you back to the ship in time. Keeping with the ports of call it is worth considering some ports will only allow guests from the ship if they are on a planned shore excursion from the ship, unless they have arranged a tourist visa prior to the cruise, for example Russia. Ports such as St Petersburg, you must be on a planned excursion and show this to the port authorities as you are leaving the ship. I absolutely loved my visit to St Petersburg, the architecture is just stunning and there really is so much to experience, from Catherine Palace with the iconic amber room, The Hermitage museum filled with history and culture of Russia and the one that struck me the most, the Church of Spilled Blood, a stunning building and the attention to detail both inside and out, is like nothing I have seen before. To bring this point together, there is an endless list of things to see and experience in a port like this and you will want to make the most of the time, by have a shore excursion booked you skip the entry queues and are guided around, maximising every moment and ensuring you see as much as possible. Another consideration when choosing how to spend your day, cities such as Rome are in land and can be some distance from the port, it is better to take a planned excursion or at least the ships transfer service, firstly this will be the most cost effective but also offers the peace of mind for getting to where you want to be and returning to the ship on time. While we are on the topic of the ships transfers, particularly in the Mediterranean ports of call, a free shuttle service to the local town is often provided by the ship, some ports do not offer a pedestrian walk or if it is longer distance from the ship a shuttle is provided to save you the walk. This doesn’t usually need to be pre-booked, but keep in mind peak times can bring a bit of a wait for the shuttles. I spent much of my time on board in the Caribbean and this does often have people unsure what to do regarding a planned trip. Again, this much depends on the day you would like to have. Many are in search of the best beach, to relax swim in the clear blue sea and enjoy a cocktail or two and outside the terminal you will find many taxis offering their services and I would say if you are a confident traveller, this option is fine. However, bear in mind you are heading out to a mass of drivers wanting to look after you, they usually will all be offering the same price so don’t waste too much time haggling the fare, most of the time they have a section where registered drivers are allowed to stand and I do suggest heading for those over the ones outside the terminal, they are usually more experienced, trustworthy to come back at the agreed pick up time from the beach and know to be back to the ship in time for departure. There are some great tours I would highly recommend in the Caribbean. Places such as Antigua, to visit Shirley Highs with amazing views over English Harbour and down to Nelsons Dockyard, filled with history. St Kitts Railway is another fantastic experience, the train takes you on a tour of the island while being served cocktails. For the thrill seekers, St Lucia has a zipline experience through the rainforest. All of these can be booked through the ships shore excursions and are so well organised and safe. I could talk all day about the wonderful things you could do in each port of call, I wanted to share just a few things to consider when planning your day. While there is a place for the independent guests to head out and explore, I think there can be a real benefit to taking shore excursions and sometimes is the better option to ensure you really do make the best of every moment in some of the most amazing locations in the World!

Booking a cruise can be a little daunting, especially if it is your first time. I have put together the top 3 things to consider when booking a cruise. Having worked on board cruise ships for 5 years, I can tell you the best spots on board and how to maximise the experience, to make it a trip of a lifetime. First up is the itinerary. Are you looking for something port intensive, where each stop offers a new place to explore and immerse yourself in local cultures, see iconic sights and tick places off your bucket list? Itineraries such as the Baltic & Scandinavia, experience entirely different cultures and stunning architecture. This being one of my favourite itineraries, particularly St Petersburg with its culture or Tallinn for its stunning medieval old town. Maybe you would love to see iconic sights and be soaking up the sunshine? A Mediterranean itinerary could be for you, with stops in beautiful Italian ports, such as Rome and Florence. The Mediterranean itineraries often include my personal favourites Barcelona and Lisbon, where you can explore the incredible food markets and vibrant cities. You must try a pastéis de Nata, in Lisbon, they are mouth-watering custard tarts and famous around the city. Your idea could be tropical sunshine of the Caribbean, visiting beautiful islands where you can discover the beaches and choose which one is most like paradise and which island makes the best rum punch. Personal experience, all of them is the answer and most of the time you wont remember! These itineraries to name a few, can give an idea of what the perfect cruise is for you, remembering that even when the ship is in port, you are free to stay on board and enjoy all the luxuries the ship has to offer. Next up is choosing your Cabin; Each cruise line will offer their own variation on cabin types; Inside Cabin – No window or balcony, perfect type of cabin if you don’t plan to spend much time there, using mainly for a place to sleep and change before the next day or activity. Outside Cabin – Offering a picture window (large rectangle or square window) or a porthole (smaller round window), sometimes obstructed by ship equipment but the option to have a full clear view is available on most ships. Balcony Cabin – This will give full sliding window doors out to a private balcony from your cabin, head out to enjoy the epic sun rises and sunsets, the chance to watch the ship as she sails in and out of ports or even for some quiet time on those days at sea. Sitting watching the horizon and listening to the waves I have to say, this is the most amazing feeling. Perfect if you are on an itinerary with great views, you get to experience them without having to rush up to the open decks and can even stay in your pyjamas and watch while breakfast is delivered to your cabin! Suite – As you would expect this is the largest cabin type on board, often at the forward or aft (front or back) of the ship and will often have a balcony wrapping around the side of the ship, giving maximum viewing opportunities. The suite itself, will often have a separate bedroom and living room space and the bathroom will be larger, many featuring a bath and if you’re looking for something special, some will come with a whirlpool bathtub! It is also worth noting that some of the 5* luxury cruise lines offer balcony or suite accommodation as a standard on their ships and the ultimate luxury of having a mini hot tub on your private balcony! Keeping with the cabin choice, once you have chosen the type of cabin, next comes the location. You will often see a range of prices for each cabin type, this is because the location on the ship. The three main locations are as follows; Forward (front of the ship) – this is where you would feel most movement on the ship, not that you often would, but when the ship is out on the open seas it will of course create some movement and this is where it is at its most sensitive. Aft (back of the ship) – this is the part I describe as the ships bum and yes sometimes she does like to wiggle her bottom! The movement would be less noticeable than at the forward of the ship, if any at all. It is one of my favourite spots, it is so peaceful listening to the waves and watching the wake of the ship as you sail to your next port. Mid-Ship – This is exactly as it describes, in the middle of the ship and the perfect location for if you are looking to be close to most areas onboard and is the most stable area, should there be any movement. Finally I am going to talk about dining options. Some cruise lines will offer a "traditional" dining option, known as first or second seating, around 6pm or 8pm. This is where at the time of booking, you will chose one of the two and that is the time you would dine each evening, usually the same table with the same waiter, they will get to know you and your likes or dislikes. Having your favourite bottle of wine ready to pour and knows to put that extra bread roll on the plate to have with your soup starter! The alternative is often referred to as Freedom dining, this means you are free to dine at any time and this can be a different time each night. Bear in mind, if lots of people on freedom dining have chosen the same time to head for the restaurant there could be a little wait, great excuse to find a spot in one of the bars and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail. Food is a huge part of the cruise experience, so there are many other dining options to enjoy on board, including a 24 hour buffet on most ships. The buffets are a great way to experience a variety of cuisines and often the ship will plan the dishes around the ports visited throughout the cruise, to include local dishes. The speciality dining venues are a must try, with a huge variety of cuisines and experiences to choose from. I always say you must try the speciality dining venues early on in the cruise, as I am certain you will want to go back again before the cruise is over. So there we are, my top three things to consider when making your cruise booking, a few tips and favourites of mine, to help with the decision making. It truly is an experience like no other, seeing the beautiful ship docked, gangways down and the amazing team waiting to greet you. Until you experience it for yourself, you wont quite know just how incredible it is, but once you have you won’t be able to stop talking about it. If you have heard of a cruise addict? Trust me, it is a real thing!

I am already off to a “flying” start, as I board my Emirates flight, the legroom here is huge, I had to double check to make sure I am in the right seat! As I settle a glamourous stewardess hands me a warm towel to freshen up and a food menu for the flight, which includes a 3-course lunch and an afternoon tea. Upon arrival, I make my way through the terminal, I have never seen such a luxurious airport, with a huge waterfall feature in the centre of the terminal. Luggage in hand I make my way outside to find a taxi, I chose not to arrange a transfer this time, as the taxis are very reasonably priced and easily accessible, although seeing the luxurious cars lined up with the drivers waiting for their guests, did leave me a little envious! I chose the Sofitel hotel in Jumeirah Beach Resort, often referred to as JBR, it is a great central location, with a golden beach just outside and a choice of restaurants along “The Walk” which is popular spot for people watching and, in the evening, where the locals like to drive through, showing off their rides, from a Lamborghini to Maserati and everything in between. Immediately, I am struck by a stunning gold chandelier taking centre stage in the lobby, the silk curtains draped around the walls and the marble floor. The smell of incense burning, has created the most wonderful atmosphere and the sense of ultimate luxury. The theme continued throughout the hotel and my room, with a stunning sea view, it was perfect. After a quick freshen up I explore the hotel and head for a swim in the rooftop infinity pool, overlooking Jumeirah beach and is the perfect location to watch the sunset. The lights are sparkling across the city, time to dress up and head out. Having now met with my friend, its time to head for Downtown Dubai, the location of the Burj Khalifa and the evening show that is the dancing fountains. Sweeping round the base of the tallest building in the world, the water comes to life and performs to music, from Arabian nights to Michael Jackson, leaving you mesmerised. Downtown is the heart of the city in many ways, featuring the largest shopping mall in the world and it really is a mall like no other, including having its own aquarium and every shop and designer name you can possibly think of. Our first full day and it's time to unwind and soak up some of the sunshine and the best way to enjoy the beaches of Dubai is in one of its beach clubs. Two of my favourites being Zero Gravity, close to the Skydive Dubai, lively and often has live music and a view of the thrill seekers take off for a skydive over the Palm island. For those wanting to take part in that bucket list experience of skydiving, I recommend doing early in the holiday, as they have a weight restriction and after all the delicious food and relaxing, it is easy to add a few pounds! The second favourite of mine is White Beach Club, it is part of the famous Atlantis hotel at the top of the palm and offers the relaxed beach club vibe and has amazing views of the Burj al Arab in the distance. Suitably sun soaked and filled with cocktails, it was back to the hotel to prepare for our evening. We headed for Madinat Jumeirah, it is designed to resemble a traditional Arabian town and features stunning boutique hotels, restaurants and an Arabian market, known as a souk. Wondering through all the wonderful stalls offering a range of locally sourced or made items, such as gold, spices, textiles and sand designs. The incense aroma and fresh spices filled the air and it really gives you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture. We found the perfect spot for our evening, overlooking the Burj al Arab and enjoying the feeling of luxury and glamour that we had been in abundance of so far this trip. It's day two and we have booked the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa and we were so happy to wake up and see once again the clear blue skies, ensuring we would get the best views of Dubai and beyond. Just a few seconds in a lift, took us to the 148 floor of the Burj Khalifa and the moment you step out the view is stunning. The deck runs around the building, giving panoramic views of Dubai, out into the desert beyond the city. Back down to earth, we decided to explore the malls a little more and have some lunch overlooking the elegant building we had just been at the top of, seeming quite surreal looking back up at the incredible structure. After seeing beyond the city, from the viewing platform, it seemed only right that we take a jeep safari into the desert. We are met late afternoon outside the hotel and taken to the jeep, where we then head into the sand dunes, it is a thrill-seekers paradise, we then stop at a rest spot. Camels are relaxing and we stretch our legs taking in the surroundings, it is perfectly timed to see the sunset over the desert, the view is calming after the thrill of the sand dunes. We jump back in our jeeps and are taken on a smoother journey deeper into the desert, where we come to an Arabian desert camp, set with a huge pit fire, we sit down and enjoy a traditional Arabian feast under the moon and stars. Light Arabian music plays, creating such a beautiful setting. After a while, enjoying the atmosphere, the music stops and the lights are dimmed, in the distance you hear the call to prayer travelling with the wind across the desert, from the mosques in the city and the camp silences as we respect the local prayer time. This moment is one that will last me a lifetime, it was surreal, to be under the stars, in the middle of the desert, it really was a magical Arabian night. The trip continued to be filled with sun seeking in the beach clubs and enjoying the nightlife. Our last night we spent in a restaurant on “The Walk” great for people watching and reflecting on the wealth of luxury, elegance and class the city has, such a variety of things to do, immersing yourself in the fascinating cultures, taking in the dramatic skylines and emptying your bank accounts in the shopping malls! I couldn’t have asked for a better city and beach break. For those wondering how safe Dubai is, as you will have read at the start of this article, I arrived in the city alone making my own way to the hotel and felt completely safe in doing so. The trip was a girl’s getaway, everyone is extremely welcoming and respectful. If anything, the danger was my dear friend suggesting more cocktails!
