My Travel Diaries

Singapore

Saturday 28th July 2007

5 Stars

We stayed in Singapore for 7 days on our way to Bali. Our chosen hotel was the 5* Shangri la and we had booked a Horizon room. A great choice, the hotel was excellent and the staff were always polite and helpful and made us feel welcome.

Just a few minutes stroll took us to Orchard Road, the main shopping area with bars, restaurants, shopping malls and cafes selling just about everything at fantastic prices.
Food was not a problem, as there are many, steakhouses, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Thai, European and fast food restaurants. We found a local food hall in a cellar of a shop where they sold ice cold Tiger beer for about 60p for a large bottle and the food was pretty decent too.

If you visit Singapore you must visit the historic Raffles Hotel. In the famous Long Bar they serve the renowned Singapore Sling for about £2.00. On the tables are baskets of monkey nuts in shells and it is customary to throw the shells onto the floor. Do not try this in your hotel bar though!!!

Singapore is spotless, the cleanest city in the world. Laws banning chewing gum and large fines for dropping litter are rigorously enforced. This really was a refreshing change.

Getting around was no problem with hundreds of taxis, a very good bus service and the MRT underground which is easy to use and very cheap. We went on the City Tour Bus which took us round the major sites and attractions at a reasonable price..

We visited the Zoo which is well laid out and one of the best in the world. You will not see cages or bars they operate an "Open Plan Scheme". There is also a night safari where you tour round on a tram. This has become one of the top attractions in Singapore.

The 128 acre Botanical Gardens is well worth a visit to escape the hustle and bustle of the centre. Go in the morning as it becomes very hot in the afternoon.
We took the cable car across to Sentosa Island which takes you above the busy harbour 60 metres below. Coaches take you around the different attractions and $8 billion is being spent over next four years to make it one of the best theme parks in Asia as more is being added each year. Fort Siloso which was built by the British to defend Singapore is fascinating if you are interested in history with life like wax figures and sound effects.

Singapore is a fascinating city with so much to see and do. It is clean, safe and well organised. I would certainly recommend at least 7 days there to see some of the main attractions and enjoy the splendour of this vibrant city.
