Cuba - Playa Pesquero

Joanne Kemp on 31 March 2009
Cuba is one of my favourite holiday destinations and so this was my second visit to the island.

Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, on the North and East Coast is the Atlantic Sea and the South is the Caribbean - flying time is roughly 9/10 hours depending where you fly into.

The main tourist resorts are situated on the Cayos, Varadero, Guadalavaca and Playa Pesquero, the latter being where we stayed.

The first thing you will notice when driving from the airport are all the amazing old style American cars and friendly smiling faces of the local Cubans - which is a great welcome to this beautiful island.

We stayed at the hotel Playa Pesquero which is situated on a idyllic white sandy beach, if you don't want to just sit on the beach with crystal clear blue waters, there is an abundance of non motorised watersports here for you to try, pedalos, kayaks, windsurfing - we went the Hobbie Cats on a windy day, which was amazing (and a little scary too!).

Away from the beach, the huge free form swimming pool is very child friendly which has not really any deep parts so don't dive in! If sunning by the pool or beach makes you feel a little restless, the hotel has a comprehensive daytime programme from volleyball, football, spanish lessons to even salsa dancing!

As well as all the above you now have to decide on where to eat!! There are endless eating options to choose from, breakfast is usually served in the main buffet restaurant and lunch can be taken in one of many areas. Evening meals can be taken in the main buffet or a choice of A la Carte restaurants, these of which need to be booked on arrival, our favourite was the Romantica.

The bar/reception area at night is a hive of activity before and after dinner - you must try one of the many cocktails!

Although there is so much going on at the hotel, you must get out and see the "Real Cuba" - a trip to Havana is a must do - either a day trip or overnight visit, there are also many other excursions such as a visit to a cigar factory in Holguin, Guardalavaca, Swim with Dolphins, Catamaran trips plus others to chose from.

Another fantastic holiday and I can't wait to return to Cuba again!
