Northumberland Coast

I visited Northumberland with my family for the first time in October half term. What a beautiful part of the country. We stayed in the lovely fishing village of Seahouses, in a converted grain barn cottage.

Seahouses is a large village with a great little centre, offering a good range of shops to keep you stocked up, as well as a few restaurants. As you would expect fish and chips features highly and I would recommend Lewis’s fish bar. From Seahouses you are able to take boat trips to the Farne Islands (although it’s a bit choppy in October).

From Seahouses you can see the magnificent Bamburgh Castle in the distance. You can walk the three miles along the beautiful beach to visit the hotel, or take a trip by car. The castle is still inhabited by the Armstrong family. This is a lovely castle with a great activity pack for kids and very helpful staff. It’s also a beautiful location for a wedding.

Further north you can visit Holy Island, but make sure you check out the tides as you access this by a tidal causeway. We headed onwards to Berwick on Tweed for a walk around this historic walled town and you can grab a map for more information on the various points of interest.

A trip to this area wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Alnwick castle, famous for its use in some parts of the Harry Potter films. Unfortunately the castle was closed but the gardens remain open all year and are well worth the visit. Activities are available throughout the year and as we were there around Halloween there was pumpkin carving, witches shows, arts and crafts. We particularly enjoyed the Poison Garden tour. Also highly recommended is Treehouses restaurant – amazing but make sure you pre-book.

Other places we visited included Rothbury, a small market town with plenty of history and Newbiggin on Sea, a popular seaside town. Overall our experience was fantastic. All the locals we met were extremely friendly and welcoming – especially when it came to trick or treating!! Can’t wait to visit again!
