My Travel Diaries
My wife and I decided to go somewhere for New Year, and escape the grey skies of the UK. We arrived in Miami to glorious sunshine and 2 friends at the airport.
We spent the first few days in Miami, staying just off South Beach in a boutique hotel owned by a chain in Miami. The rooms were designed in art deco which is renowned in this area. We had prepaid tickets for the Shore Club, a hotel on south beach for the New Years Eve celebrations. What a night, absolutely fantastic. We partied into the early hours enjoying the moment with hundreds of well behaved, happy people.
From Miami we moved down to Key West, the furthest point south in all America and only a short distance from Cuba, about 90 miles. We stayed in one of the many guest houses that suited our budget and enjoyed the eccentricity of our hosts. Key West has a naval base, a really good beach, a beautiful mariner and DUVAL STREET. This is the place to visit for shops, bars and restaurants. It has a great buzz about it, and can take a good while to walk down. Just back from Duval Street you will find Ernest Hemingway's house, now a museum of sorts. Another great place to visit is the aquarium. They have many species of fish, lobster, turtle and other aquatic wonders.
One of the highlights are the beautiful sunsets. We wandered down about 5pm, joined in with the street entertainers on the Key, watched the 'Cat Man' perform with his acrobatic feline friends, grabbed a beer and watched the sun go down over the tip of Florida and the USA, and savoured the moment.
We stopped at Islamorada in the Middle Keys on our way back to Miami, where we enjoyed a brilliant days sea fishing with Captain Kirk. We had a great day catching 40 odd fish, mainly yellow snapper, 4 of which we took to a local eatery and had cooked 4 different ways, and we ate and enjoyed until our bellies were full. The fishing worked out about £120 each, but worth every penny. A great first time experience.
We then meandered back to Miami to finish of with a couple of days rest and relaxation on the beach before our flights home.
My best holiday ever.... ....so far.
