My Travel Diaries

Kuredu/Maldives

Thursday 2nd October 2008

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a place. All the Atolls we flew over in the seaplane were amazing. A great life experience, a fantastic travel experience. We landed by seaplane at Kuredu and were escorted to the reception area for a welcome drink and a quick overview of this fabulous island by our host. We made our way to our water bungalow on the opposite of the island, and were pleasantly surprised by the room and the outdoor shower and toilet. Open to the elements and not embarrassing in the slightest.

The complex was relatively big, which I liked. Plenty to do and also plenty of places to do nothing. Laura and I were celebrating Laura's landmark birthday, which we did on the 6th at one of the 3 restaurants. We had a bottle of veuve and a good fillet of beef on the beach. We used the 2 other restaurants where we had to pay extra outside of our all inclusive package. But the food wasn't why I was here...

... the sunsets, the sealife, the weather, the company and the peace. The sea was many shades of blue and greens. You could walk round the entire island in a couple of hours, but because of the sun, we decided to see it all in different stages. I loved nothing more than listening to my music and walking in the calming, warm sea looking at the different fishes swimming around my feet. One afternoon a small green turtle swam straight by me, quite happy it seemed being in paradise.

One of the highlights was the diving and snorkelling. Apart from the wide spectrum of colours adorned by the many species of fish and coral, we were fortunate to dive down to the small ship wreck on the house reef. We brushed by rays and turtles, lobsters and star fish. You didn't have to dive to see all this, just snorkelling was a sheer delight. We did 2 proper dives and spent a part of every day snorkelling somewhere off the island.

The temperature was about 30-34 degrees most days. For Laura's birthday we went for a massage in the morning at the east side of the island in one of the two spa's. It was heavenly and something I would definitely recommend at least once. After lunch we walked to the west side of Kuredu where I surprised Laura with a day cabana for us both. An afternoon underneath the cabana canopy and the Madivian sun, pure relaxation. Every time we felt a bit warm we would go for a dip or grab a bottle of water and cool down. At sunset we had a cocktail at the sunset bar and watch the most glorious of sunsets. Pure heaven.

This was a magical holiday, and one I will remember forever. I would say the Maldives would be my favourite beach destination I've ever visited. Kuredu suited me, but people may prefer something quieter and maybe more remote. But every honeymoon couple or holiday maker we spoke to, loved it. 10/10

Another highlight was a coffee bar at the end of the jetty. Between 5 and 11pm you could grab a coffee or tea, sit at the end of the jetty and you would see fish flying through the air, and the odd turtle (big turtle) and a few sting rays swim past. It was something we ended up doing every night, a beautiful way to the end the day.
