My Travel Diaries
This time last year I was in Australia.
However, circumstance meant I couldn't fly for a couple of months this autumn, so in early October I took the chance to re-discover the magic of our own country. With a couple of girlfriends, I opted for a short cottage break in North Cornwall. I'm originally from the Westcountry, so the pull of home was strong, the nearer we got.
This rugged coastline which sweeps from North Devon down into Atlantic Cornwall, is dramatic, beautiful and atmospheric. It's not called the Wreaker's Coast for nothing! Many shipwrecks have happened here in the past. So, if it's history you want, along with beautiful scenery, and scrumptious food, then Cornwall has it in abundance.
After an easy drive on fairly quiet roads, with a comfort break for coffee in the Devon town of Honiton, we went on to enjoy our few days (out of season) in our 250 year old thatched roof cottage in the village of Morwestow, near Bude. The beauty of a UK break in a cosy cottage is that you can go prepared for any weather. You can cater for yourselves, or eat out. You can have the holiday you want, without any restrictions. So, whether you want to completely relax, or dash out to discover every nook and cranny of the surrounding area, the choice is yours. Body boarding on the nearest beach, hiking the coastal trails, looking for gifts in the small coastal resorts, or curling up with a glass of wine and a book. It's all yours to decide.
Our Bell Bouy Cottage, was one of three in a row in a busy country lane with easy access parking. It had traditional low beamed ceilings, thick walls, creaking floorboards, and tiled slate floors, but it came with all mod cons. And wonderful views from the back upstairs window. For families it also had the bonus of a secure, enclosed back garden - with patio table and chairs. This provided us with a real bonus in the early autumn sunshine we were lucky enough to enjoy.
Many cottages in the UK can be let out for a long weekend of 3 nights, as well as short breaks of 4 nights, and the traditional 7 nights. And you can hire them all year around. Even Christmas and New Year.
We did some sightseeing, and visited Bude, Boscastle, Tintagel, Port Isaac, and ended up in Padstow - of Rick Stein fame. This is an ideal part of the world to visit (yes, I admit I'm biased) because it gives you easy driving access to parts of Devon and Cornwall. The Eden Project was only 1.5 hours drive away. And the food .... try cream teas, cornish pasties, scrumpy, or fish and chips sat on a harbour wall - it's all part of a strong West Country heritage.
If you have a few days to spare, in any season, why not explore a small part of our own countryside.
You won't have the hassle of airports, foreign languages, and strange currency.
So, if you are interested in a break like the one I had, then give me a call because we feature a selection of country, seaside, and city breaks. Not just cottages, but modern bungalows, large townhouses, and city apartments. Whatever you fancy, there's a property out there with your name on it.
