My Travel Diaries
My favourite place so far but I guess that's understandable as I got married here.
We've been back several times since and my love for the place grows each time I visit. The last time we went, we decided to stay in 'Kato Paphos' on a self catering basis close the Venetian harbour that Paphos is famous for. It was perfect. The standard of accommodation was excellent.
We hired a car as visiting Cyprus wouldn't be complete without a visit up the Troodos Mountains, (they drive on the left hand side of the road too!!) The mountains were amazing and visiting the Kykoss monastery was lovely. This is where the monks make the local beer 'Keo' to sell on the island. All profits go towards the monastery.. it is made of gold!
Back in Paphos we spent most days at Coral Bay, where the beach is made up of pure white sands and the water is crystal clear. This is an exception as most other beaches in the area are made up of a rocky coastline. We also spent leisurely days on the rocks in the harbour, where we sat and read and went snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. The locals joined us there most afternoons and we found them to be very pleasant and welcoming.
On an evening it wasn't too hard to find good restaurants or bars. If you like seafood, a particular favourite of ours was the 'Pelican', a fantastic restaurant situated right on the harbours edge. For more traditional cuisine then 'Maestro's' was also superb, but there are far too many to choose from.
On occasion we would also venture into the lively Bar Street where we enjoyed some great nights, meeting other couples and friends for a sing a long in one of the many Kareoke bars or dancing the night away in a couple of the nightclubs there. The nice thing about this area is that it would be easy to avoid if Bar Street wasn't to your taste.
During the day we often took the very regular bus service to the top of the town for the daily morning market where you can obtain local traditional souvenirs such as rugs, pottery and hand made bedding etc.. which is beautifully made. We then would walk down through the town centre browsing through the many designers shops often spending a little too much!! After all that shopping we were in need of refreshment and there certainly is not a shortage of local bars and cafes happy to serve a refreshing cold beer.
We have experienced several activities such as hiring a speedboat and riding into the harbour which was great fun, sailing the 'Jolly Roger' night cruise and going fishing; a great experience! Also the water park was entertaining and the jeep safari up to the Alkanas National Park was fantastic. I have many memories of Paphos and each time we have visited we have experienced different accommodation, different activities making each visit totally unique and special.
