My Travel Diaries
After recently returning from my South African adventure I wanted to share my visit with you.
After an 11 hour flight I landed into Johannesburg airport. With there being only 1 hour time difference there was no jet lag....... fantastic!
From here we embarked upon our journey up into the mountains. We travelled along the vast motorways up to Drakensburg, this took around 5 hours...... be warned the motorway service stations are few and far between!
We got up to Catherdral Peak where we were staying, the fog was thick and so we quickly had dinner and retired to the bar..... The next morning the view was stunning - we were surrounded by snow capped mountains and took a helicopter ride up to the peak to enjoy Champagne whilst looking out over Lesotho and South Africa...
After this it was time for Quad Biking up into the hills....great fun and on the way back down we saw Baboons and lots of Springbok. The next day I had the pleasure of visiting the Drakensburg Boys Choir. We were in tears to see how amazing they were, from singing Queen songs to typical African music, the 3 hours passed quickly. Anyone going up to Drakensburg should try and get tickets to see this.
Next on our agenda was the town of Nottingham Rd, were I stayed at the Fordoun Lodge and Spa..... wow what can I say , the Spa was great, delicious food and a new experience of trying out a flotation tank!
My next adventure and the one I was looking forward to the most was to travel up to the Great St Lucia Wetlands. This is about 3 hours from Durban up the coast, plenty of beautiful seaside towns en route.
We arrived in time to do a Hippo and Croc Boat safari. Hundreds of hippos live in this lake along side the crocs in perfect harmony!!! Next was onto a safari truck, to search for the big 5 in the bush. We managed to see Rhinos, Hippos and lots of Buck, Springbok and Warthogs - what an amazing experience this was!
After a bartering session in the market we stayed overnight at Lidiko Lodge in St Lucia, this was a lovely homely hotel right in the town centre, but very quiet set back in lovely gardens.
Next was back to Jo Burg for our last night. We stayed in Sandton City as this was closer to the airport and has lots of delicous restaurants around as well as Nelson Mandella Square.... I had my first taste of Ostrich and Springbok here..... The shopping mall here is huge with every shop you can think of, so if you want some last minute bargains before heading home this is the place to be.
South Africa is amazing , a vast and colourful country that I would highly recommend to visit..... food and drink are very cheap and are great value.
Why not try somewhere different you maybe surprised!
