Return to South Africa

It's been quite a few years since Cy, my husband and I last visited. After 2 years of being starved of travels, this was the opportunity. Our journey began in Camps Bay and it did not disappoint. Conveniently placed to visit Table Mouintain, the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, with its vibrant shops and restaurants, Robbin Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years and Boulders Beach, famous for its penguins. Camps Bay has a wonderful beach and some great restaurants. I thoroughly recommend it to ease you into the adventure and scenery that South Africa has in abundance. Next stop Franschhoek, less than an hour’s drive away. Here you could be in Switzerland. Mouth-watering landscapes and an abundance of boutique properties. There is a fabulous motor museum well worth a visit, even if you, like me, would not ordinarily be interested. The food and wine on offer in the area is exceptional. We resisted the wine tram, that takes you around the various wineries in the area, with an opportunity to sample, which obviously is good fun.

We then moved onto Hermanus. Famous for whales giving birth in the bay, but unfortunately not in March. The beach is endless and stunning. The Atlantic is great for a paddle but to swim in is a little more challenging. We settled for lengthy walks and discovered a wonderful beach restaurant and bar.

Having decided that a safari would be perfect to incorporate, Gondwana was out next port of call. Around 4 hours drive but the roads are wonderful and the South Africans drive on the same side of the road as the UK. On arrival at the main gate, we were escorted down to the reception area and our car was taken to a car parking area, out of site. Individual circular thatch double volume suites, overlooking the valley. This conservancy has the big five and also acts as a guardian for a number of endangered white rhino. It was fabulous. Our guide was determined to find whatever the guests wanted to see. On our evening safaris, we were twice caught out by sudden thunderstorms but the fireside in the bar proved to be a popular spot to catch up and compare notes with fellow guests. Stellenbosch was the final stop on the way back to Cape Town. Another wonderful wine area and we treated ourselves to a stay at the Lanzerac Hotel. Beautiful historic property that did not disappoint.

We will return to South Africa. Such a beautiful place and great value for money.
