My Travel Diaries
I was invited by the Trinidad and Tobago tourist board to visit these tiny twin islands and experience the delights of both destinations. Tobago is your traditional Caribbean island with wonderful beaches and a very relaxed holiday atmosphere. Trinidad on the other hand is the larger of the two and located just off the northeast tip of South America, more industrial than Tobago but with the oldest rainforest in the western hemisphere it is an excellent option for a two centre holiday.
Just nine hours flying time from the UK and only 21miles apart makes it so easy to fly or take the ferry between the two islands.
Tobago is the most southerly destination in the Caribbean Island chain and generally speaking is outside of the hurricane belt. It offers great beaches, wonderful diving opportunities with over 300 species of coral, game fishing, golf, watersports and the Main Ridge eco forest. Tobago is also famed for its turtle nesting on the beach; they nest from March through to July each year. I stayed in both hotels and also some wonderful villas when staying on the islands and got to experience some superb local cuisine in some of the many restaurants on both islands. With accommodation from luxury hotels to eco/dive lodges and villas, there is something to suit everyone’s taste and budget.
Trinidad offers the biggest carnival in the Caribbean which takes place in February each year, but please take note accommodation gets booked up way in advance. With its rainforest and lush vegetation it seems more South American than Caribbean – it offers a wide variety of flora and fauna, twitchers will be impressed with over 430 bird species, there is the Caroni bird sanctuary as well as the El Tucuche reserve and Asa Wright nature centre.
I was impressed with the individuality of each island and as I mentioned earlier I think this is a great combination for a twin centre holiday or for a traditional beach holiday then Tobago would be perfect.
