My Travel Diaries
I have always wanted to see Colorado. The inspiration came from songs like ‘Rocky Mountain High’ by John Denver. Many of his songs describe the magnificent scenery and the life he spent in one of the most beautiful states in the USA.
I arrived on a snowy day in April 2007, collected my 4x4 from Denver airport and headed south down to Colorado Springs. I spent a couple of days looking around and decided to move up to Winter Park where I had an amazing experience. I met some people in my hotel called Winter Park Mountain Lodge and decided to go snowmobiling with one of them called Jess. As it was mid April, this was the last trip of the winter season, but as we drove this ‘motorbike on skis’ up to 50 miles an hour through the forest trees up and over the Rocky Mountains it took our breath away. It was the place to experience different things and make the most of the mountains that surrounded us.
The following day we went white water rafting through Royal Gorge which was spectacular and very wet! Raft Masters knew what they were doing and managed to keep the raft the right way up as we navigated 14 sets of rapids including Sunshine Falls, Grateful Dead, Wall Slammer, Boat Eater and Tombstone! On the way home I remember buying a birthday cake and candles to celebrate my 50th birthday the following day and enjoying a great birthday meal with the friendly team at Deno’s on the big day.
Then it was time for me and my new friend Jess to move to the perfect picture postcard town of Breckenridge. I called it Christmas town as there were so many pretty lights at night everywhere you looked. Breckenridge is a very high ski resort and is able to keep the winter sports going for an extra week, so it was only right that we hired another snowmobile to take us 12,500 feet up to ‘The Continental Divide’ where the views were incredible. There is nothing like a mug of hot chocolate to warm you up in the freezing temperatures. If you have not tried snowmobiling before I highly recommend it. It’s very safe, exhilarating and a great way to meet others and get some different photo memories. I hope you like the shots that I have chosen to represent my time in Colorado.
I remember a superb restaurant in Breckenridge called ‘Bubba Gump Shrimp Company’ named and designed around Forest Gump. This is a great themed restaurant with delicious steak and shrimps in a film setting, with highly motivated staff. Run Forrest run, is something that I will always have fond memories of.
I met some great people in the bar as I was introduced to Tuaca, the local liqueur and sipped cocktails while taking a dip in the hot tub. I suppose that Colorado will be remembered for having some great fun in the snow with some lovely people. I can fully understand and appreciate why John Denver fell in love with the state, I do hope to return again one day.
I visited Colorado as part of my journey around the world in the spring of 2007. Please feel free to call me if you would like to know more about the most incredible places that I have seen on earth.
