Crete, an island with majestic splendour!

Friday 14th October 2011

5 Stars

WOW! Sometimes when you arrive at your hotel you get the 'WOW' factor and this happened to me at the Daios Cove Spa Resort, near Agios Nikolaos on the north east coast of Crete. I was lucky enough to have been chosen to spend a few days as a guest and am so pleased that I did!

Daios Cove 5* Luxury Resort and Villas was created using 50 tons of dynamite to blast the cove and took 800 stoneworkers over 3 years to shape the stones, used build is this resort in this majestic setting which includes it's own private beach. The 120 million Euro investment even includes 3 funicular railways and a fleet of buggies to transport you around the resort.

The sun was shining, the sea was blue and clear and the food was excellent.

There is alot to do on the island of Crete and my time here was just a few days, so I did my best to take in as much as possible...and one of the 'must do's' is a day cruise to the island of Spinalonga. I was collected from the beach and headed off for a 6 hour trip. The island was used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957.It is notable for being one of the last leper colonies in Europe. When I arrived on the island I decided to walk all around it seeing the fortress like buildings and getting some great photos. The boat then took us to a beautiful bay where I had lunch onboard and then jumped overboard! Swimming in the clear waters was great fun...then it was time to head back to Daios Cove.

I am so pleased that I took 'time out' to visit the quaint fishing village of Agios Nikolaos. Browsing through (and buying a few souvenirs) was a pleasure in the cobbled streets, combined with a drink of Raki (Crete's local spirit) in one of the many alfresco pavement cafe's overlooking the 'bottomless lake'

If you are planning a holiday, then Crete has an amazing amount of different things to offer. Sun, beaches and Greek hospitality are for everyone, It's an island that needs to be explored...maybe with a hire car, I am so pleased to have enjoyed Crete and enjoyed the hospitality of the Greek people. This has allowed me to experience everything I need to know to help you when you are looking to plan your holiday.

There are many great hotels on the island, I believe the 50 tones of dynamite, 3 years of work and dedication of everyone involves should be experienced by those who love the 'WOW' factor!

Thank you for reading my journal, enjoy looking at the photos and I look forward to hearing from you and helping you get the most from your Crete experience.
