My Travel Diaries

Edinburgh for tradition, haggis and culture

Saturday 29th August 2009

4 Stars

I love Scotland! Edinburgh is a beautiful city full of colour, music and friendly people. Sally and I decided to fly up for the August Bank Holiday weekend for a short break. Our hotel was in Leith next to all the shopping at Ocean Terminal and The Royal Yacht Britannia.

Britannia is well worth looking around; so much history and very interesting to see how royalty spent much of their time onboard and travelling around the world. Have a look at my photos.

Although we did not have time to look inside Edinburgh Castle, it looks spectacular up on the hill surrounded by gardens and rocky cliffs. The Royal Mile starts at the castle and has great shops selling traditional wares mixed with great bars and restaurants serving all kinds of whisky, beer and wine to suit all tastes.

We found a wonderful restaurant called 'Jacksons' set back from The Royal Mile. Service was great, and I had to indulge in haggis which tasted superb. It just has to be done when visiting Scotland.

Jenners, a department store, has maintained its position on Princes Street since 1838 and stands proud overlooking the street and gardens. Princes Street is being dug up at the moment as they are installing tramlines ready for the trams next year.

We enjoyed street entertainment in the old town where there was always someone trying to attract our attention and entertain in different ways. It was a shame that we were limited on time as I feel that there is so much to discover. We made the most of our time and enjoyed the friendliness of the people, together with the music, entertainment and culture of this great city.

Thank you for taking time to read my notes...I hope you like the photos that I have selected and enjoyed reading my journal. Please call me if you would like any more information on Edinburgh or other short break cities.
