My Travel Diaries
Set high on top of the Andes Mountains in Peru, this recently discovered Inca settlement is a truly inspirational destination. Sitting anywhere around this awesome, beautiful, lush green tropical area you will be amongst visitors from all around the world.
It is the perfect place to stop, think, wonder and discover your own peace and tranquility. Whether you choose to visit Machu Picchu to find yourself or lose yourself, the memory will last for ever.
You will probably arrive in Machu Picchu by flying to the capital Lima, then a short plane ride to Cuzco. Some will choose to walk the 'Inca trail' over several days with expert guides through the valleys and across the mountains. I chose to take the 4 hour train journey from Cuzco which was an incredible journey. The train passes along spectacular rivers and gorges eventually stopping in the town just below Machu Picchu called Aguas Callientes. My top tip is to stay here for 3 or 4 nights. The reason for this is so that you can choose a sunny, clear day to ascend to the top. As you are in the tropics, clouds and rain can spoil the day if the weather is not perfect. Also, the daily train arrives around 10am everyday. If you are staying in Aguas Callientes, buses start taking people on the half hour journey to the top from early in the morning. This means you can see the spectacular sights before the crowds arrive and after they have all disappeared. There is also plenty to do in the town including the natural hot springs. Avoid the day trip from Cuzco if you can as it is too crowded.
If you choose to spend a few days in the area there is one very high quality hotel actually at the top called Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge and many others in various price ranges to choose from in Aguas Callientes.
Machu Picchu is now officially one of the 'New 7 Wonders of the World'
I visited as part of my journey around the world in the Spring of 2007. I hope you like the photos that I have chosen. They are just a small selection.
If you have a desire to see Machu Picchu, then you may also consider other great spectacular places like 'The Great Wall of China' in Beijing, China, which should also include a visit to Tiananmen Square and 'The Forbidden City'
Please feel free to call me if you would like to know more about the most incredible place that I have seen on earth.
