My Travel Diaries
As I flew over the Island I knew that Mauritius was going to be a special experience. Mauritius is one of those places that people dream of and some are lucky enough to experience…and in September 2008 it was my turn. Deep in the Indian Ocean, it is a beautiful tropical island surrounded with coral reefs and turquoise lagoons. Mauritius is an island for romance and relaxing, the ‘Key to the Indian Ocean’ and full of Mauritian hospitality.
It’s a twelve hour flight from the UK, but if you don’t mind flying it is well worth the journey. I was visiting for a week as an ‘educational trip’ visiting 14 hotels to see what each had to offer as well as relaxing and enjoying my time on the beach, in the pools, lagoons, massages in the spas, fresh and sometimes exotic food in the restaurants and of course the occasional cocktail in one of the bars!
The island is famous for a few reasons. This is where the last remains of the now extinct Dodo bird used to live. You see pictures of the Dodo everywhere, but one of the things that I enjoyed was the number of different and extremely colourful birds that seemed to be everywhere, which when set amongst the lush plants and foliage made me feel as though I was on a tropical island.
Another memory will be the islands signature dance routine known as Sega Dancing. I saw several variations as I travelled around the island. The bands have a mixture of different instruments including drums and percussion and the dancers were beautiful Mauritian ladies in colourful flowing dresses and occasionally men joining in to.
The island is covered in sugar cane plants and is responsible for much of the world’s sugar production.
I visited Pamplemouses botanical gardens to see so many different and rare trees and exotic plants. You will see a couple of examples when you look at the photos.
Port Louis is the capital city, which was great for shopping but it’s not what you come to Mauritius for. This island is one of those perfect places to get married on, to have a fantastic romantic honeymoon or maybe just a relaxed ‘time out’ holiday somewhere a bit special! That’s an understatement, because you will come away from Mauritius feeling you have experienced a VERY special destination!
Golfers are also well catered for on Mauritius, with many courses including championship courses and those for beginners. Water Skiing, snorkelling, windsurfing and many other watersports are available from most hotels which are mostly situated on the long white sandy beaches all around the island. Deep sea fishing is popular all around the island with the opportunity for catching many varieties of fish including marlin.
Having seen so many fantastic and diverse hotels on my visit I would be really pleased to help and advise you on your hotel choice. With so much choice, it is important that especially for this kind of dream holiday that you make good choices.
Thank you for reading my journal. I hope you like the selection of photos that I have chosen. If you would like any help or advice when planning a trip to Mauritius I am a phone call or email away and would be delighted to hear from you.
