My Travel Diaries
I was lucky enough to be invited to experience a great German City full of tradition, culture and wonderful architecture which made me understand why so many choose Germany to visit. As I sat with a coffee in Marienplatz, Munich (Munchen) watching the world go by I decided it was somewhere to return to again one day.
Dertours, Lufthansa and Maritim had brought me here to experience Oktoberfest which many will know is regarded as the biggest and best beer festival in the world. Drinking beer from steins, singing and dancing on tables with 6,000 others in a tent is not something I do regularly but it just had to be done and was a very memorable and enjoyable experience. Even though there were 6,000 in our tent, there were 13 other tents full of people bringing hundreds of thousands together…and this was a Sunday night! The atmosphere was electric and I was surrounded by thousands of German men and women in traditional costumes and visitors from all around the world. These tents are erected every year for the event to serve beer and entertain to the sound of brass bands. Outside the tents its an enormous fairground with rollercoaster’s and old fashioned rides along with the smell of roasted almonds, Turkish delight and gingerbread hearts (which Sally and the children loved) when I got home.
Oktoberfest dates back to 1810 and has become a Munich highlight over a sixteen day period. Its not just for men, as I saw couples and families enjoying the festivities in this safe environment.
A visit to Munich would not be complete without a visit to the infamous Hofbrauhaus. We also were introduced to an amazing traditional restaurant called Ratskeller which I can highly recommend for those who appreciate fine food served in a spectacular traditional setting.
I would like to thank our hosts for their hospitality and praise them and everyone involved in putting on such an amazing show.
I hope that you enjoy looking at my photo selection taken in and around the city. Maybe you might like to join me next year as I think it would be a great idea to take a group of people to discover or re-discover this great experience at Oktoberfest 2010?
Please feel free to call me if you would like to know more about Oktoberfest, Munich or other parts of this beautiful country.
