My Travel Diaries

Penang, discovering Malaysian beauty

Saturday 13th June 2009

This is my first visit to Malaysia. I was travelling alone to discover more about the Far East and my 5 days in Penang was combined with Singapore on a 2 centre break in June 2009. Penang is a small island off the Malaysian coast famous for its beaches.

The Malaysian people were friendly and welcoming, and told me how tourism has slowed down so much after 9/11. Although you see many Chinese and Indian families who live here and visit, Europeans or Americans are rarely seen. I enjoy the environment as it makes me feel as though I am far away from the stresses of normal life. The bars are often full, music flows and singers generate a lively atmosphere even though I have no idea what they are singing about. To me…that’s what travelling abroad is all about!

My hotel was a modest 3* called Tanjung Bungah Beach. The 18 year old hotel needed a little tender loving care / updating, but the main reception and restaurant areas were smart and tidy. The pool was clean and I was right on the beach with amazing views from my room across the palm trees to the sea which was quite inspirational.

I found an area called ‘Little India’ during my trip into the capital of Georgetown where I visited Sri Mariamman Temple. This was a very old and well preserved temple in an area with many Indian and Chinese places of worship. Incense was burning everywhere giving a truly oriental feel to Georgetown, Penang. The temperature was around 40 degrees in the shade, so after a while it was time to escape to the air conditioned shopping centres to cool down.

Back at the hotel, I started talking with the resident band called ‘Lights & Rhythm’. After passing the Karaoke auditions with my rendition of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ I got to sing with the band on my last night. Fortunately for you, there are no videos or recordings of this event! There is a photo though!

And then there was my jet ski experience… I have always wanted to ride a jet ski and so far have not actually done it. I am delighted to say that my first jet ski experience was very exciting and great fun in Penang. See the photos as proof.

Malaysia is a beautiful country full of culture and friendly people. Tourism is responsible for much of the countries income and many areas including Penang are built to serve the tourist market. As a traveller, I like to explore outside the main tourist areas. Try getting to know the local people and let them help you to discover life as it is wherever you travel too.

I hope you enjoyed reading my travel diary and like the photos that I have selected. If you would like to know more on Malaysia or the rest of the amazing world that we live in feel free to call me.

I am writing this on my way home, a thirteen hour flight on Singapore Airlines largest airplane in the world, the A380. Time to head home after another great adventure in the Far East.
