My Travel Diaries
Singapore is an amazing place, where East meets West and all the cultures mix well and a genuine welcoming smile await visitors like myself. The island sits a few miles from the equator making it very hot during the day and night. Of course you can spot the foreigners like me dodging in and out of the air conditioned shopping centres and stores.
The flight out here was a long one lasting around 12 hours, however I must say that flying out on Singapore Airlines A380 was a pleasure. Flying on the largest plane in the world is a great experience. The seating was more spacious and comfortable and the service was excellent.
Singapore was part of a two centre break on my own which also included Penang in Malaysia. It’s a great place to spend some time outside normal comfort zones. I saw very few Western tourists during my 2 night, 3 day visit which I really enjoy. Mixing with some of the people of Asia makes you feel you are experiencing a completely different lifestyle which is one of the rewards of travelling.
My time here was partly to relax and enjoy my time, together with putting together two ‘around the world’ itineraries for next year. Singapore and Malaysia are both inspirational places to work…in between sightseeing and time on the beach.
My first day I decided to jump on one of the heritage sightseeing buses and listen to the commentary and remind me where everything is, as it's over 2 years since my last visit. The ‘Singapore Flyer’ is the world’s largest giant observation wheel. I resisted the temptation as I have flown on the ‘London Eye’ but I knew Singapore had to have something that was the world’s largest! On my last visit it had the world’s largest fountain called ‘The Fountain of Wealth’ and it’s still there, but Dubai now has the biggest.
Now one thing that Singapore is very proud of is Raffles Hotel. I wasn’t dressed appropriately for a ‘Singapore Gin Sling’ in ‘Raffles Long Bar’ but got some photos.
The MRT (Mass Rail Transportation) system is great. Clean and a fast way cost-effective way to get around, although taxis are cheap too and far cooler than walking!
Strolling along Orchard Road in the evening is a must. Although most people were shopping (Singapore’s main shopping street) I enjoy soaking up the atmosphere ‘people watching’ with a Chang beer. The music from the bars can be heard and some enjoy the live bands so much they join in too.
In summary, Singapore is a great place to visit for a few days. Lots to do, see and experience and very hot! Bring your shades and a hat….enjoy!
I hope you like the photos that I took in Singapore. If you would like to know more please feel free to call me at a time to suit you.
