My Travel Diaries
I think springtime is a great time to visit Switzerland. There is sunshine and warmth in the valleys and snow on the mountains, flowers starting to blossom and fresh green leaves on the trees. Sally and I visited Switzerland in April 2007 for a lovely time up in the mountains around Grindelwald.
We stayed at the Best Western Spinne, set at the foot of Mount Eiger. We were lucky enough to have a great room with a balcony overlooking the valley below and Mount Eiger above. The smell of fresh pine was everywhere and burning log fires made the welcome complete. We were there in between seasons, so it was quiet and relaxed. Some of the hotels and restaurants were closed, but the village still had much to offer, especially as we were looking to relax and enjoy Swiss hospitality, local cuisine and magnificent scenery.
We flew in and out of Geneva, hired a car and drove around many mountains, lakes and through Interlaken before arriving at our hotel.
It seemed so strange when we had to stop the car as the cows were herded along the roads from one field to another. The bells ringing in time with their steps.
We decided to catch the train on a day trip to the ‘Top of Europe’ which is up at the top of Jungfraujoch. 3,571 metres or 11,782 feet above sea level it was VERY cold. Although our journey started off in the warmth of the valley, as our journey progressed we saw less blue sky and more snow. We stopped half way and had a snowball fight which was great fun. Sally won, I got soaked and frozen, but it was all okay after a nice mug of hot chocolate!
When we reached the top, the winds were gale force and the temperatures extremely low. Inside it was warm but of course we wanted to get out in the snow. However, the truth is that we each could only stand about 30 seconds to pose for the camera (see photos) before needing to return inside. Everybody was experiencing the same difficulties with it being so high, so windy and so cold.
So, it was time to return to Grindelwald to the comfort of our hotel. A few glasses of brandy and a plate of Swiss rosti made everything perfect. We had a great time during our stay and hope to return again one day.
