My Travel Diaries

Texas...Living the Dream!

Sunday 8th April 2007

4 Stars

On arrival in Dallas, Texas on Easter Sunday I was thinking of JR Ewing, but my few days in Texas took me far beyond the soap opera...into the world of cowboys and the American way of life. I spent a few days in Dallas and then moved to Fort Worth and had a great time in both.

Although Dallas is famous for the Ewing family soap opera many years ago, the place to see is The Sixth Floor Museum which is where John F Kennedy was dramatically shot from on Friday 22nd November 1963. You can see in my photos the window where it is alleged that he was shot from and the white cross in the road marks the spot where he was shot. If you visit Dallas, please do not miss a visit to the museum.

On 9th April I strolled into the Sol Irlandos Bar and was served by Grover. Grover will stand out in my memory, as I said “Hi, how are you?” His reply was a very sarcastic…. “LIVING THE DREAM”. Since then I have stolen the line as I like it so much. I suppose that I am actually “living the dream” that so many people wish they could do, some get to do it, and some don’t. Travelling around the world for 3 months seeing so many places and meeting so many people is certainly my dream come true.

After a couple of days in Dallas it was time to take the short drive to Fort Worth where I stayed in a great traditional cowboy saloon called Stockyards Hotel. As I drove into town I witnessed a cattle drive through the main street and I stood back as the long horned mean looking steer made there way inches from me and my car (see photos).

I must admit that I enjoyed my time in cowboy country, in the Stockyards bar with my new Texas friends Chris and Jessica, singing 'My Way' on an open mike night in the White Elephant Saloon and enjoying a few Tequilas, several beers and the occasional bourbon whisky. I would highly recommend a meal in Joe T Garcia. This is a fabulous Mexican restaurant with a spectacular garden with a pool and fountains. The Mexican fajitas were superb!

Thank you for reading my Texas travel journal. I visited Texas during my incredible journey around the world in the spring of 2007. I hope you like the photos!
